I use to work for TWA back in the good old days. Two things I loved about the Concorde. When walking through the employee parking lot, and the Concorde departed. the roar it generated set off everybody's car alarm. The whole lot was set off. It always made me smile. The other thing was watching it depart while it was raining. When the Concorde rotated, the flames from the afterburners [its what I call them] pointed down onto the runway and would turn the rain water into steam. Loved watching that.

I flew between LHR and JFK a number of times back in the day. The departure from JFK was always thrilling, that immediate sharp bank after lift off - amazing ride! I am blessed to be able to say 'I used to travel supersonically - when I was younger! ' No matter how many times you flew on Concorde it NEVER lost it's magic.

It became problematic when the schedule was reduced to once a day from twice. The regular customers ceased using it as they used to use it like you'd use a train to get to work and back on the same day. When it was reinstated after the tragic crash, it wasn't making that money anymore. I worked at Heathrow for BA at the time. Ground staff..and I regularly was given Concorde ground duties. Strange fact: rows 1 and 2 were always blocked out for use by not the celebs, but for the big industry heads, bank bosses etc. A sort of hierarchy in the allocation of the seats. The regulars always took a look when boarding to see who was sitting in those rows. There's other weird stuff I could tell you about it but this isn't the forum for it. Anyway, I can tell you that BA staff was so sad on its last day. Very emotional time. I agree with you that if it was flying today, all these overnight tiktok, KZbin millionaires would be riding it just to get their likes etc..and it would probably keep this beautiful bird in the sky for a while into the future...at least until the climate brigade would bring it down anyway.

He does bring up an interesting point... it must've really been exciting at Heathrow when there were so many multiple Concorde arrivals coming in from different places (Bahrain, Washington/Miami, 2x New York, etc) all the time. Oh well, gotta give BA credit for at least sticking it out with two foreign Concorde destinations until the very end.

@phillyguy95 Well, in a nutshell, she was 34yrs old and had put in 27yrs of service. During that time, her overall costs had risen to a point where one airline alone couldn't support it. After the crash of ship F-BTSC and the market fallout from Sept 11: Air France wanted out. With them gone, Airbus decided to discontinue maintenance support, forcing British Airways to wind their service down too. The aircraft's certificate of airworthiness is now revoked, so it cannot fly.

I do enjoy fying, a lot op people don't. They, however, do love to cross the atlantic in 5 hours instead of 3 weeks with a boat. Concorde, early 747s, a380 are special. They are the biggest or fastest of biggest heap of vaporware (787). I never flown supersonic. But the in the case of concorde you flew twice as heigh as a normal airliner and twice as fast...that`s fun no matter how you put it ;)
@StratMatt777
@StratMatt777 14 жыл бұрын
@DrCooler1000 Primarily I think it was because fuel costs became too high. $10,000 a ticket was a lot as it was! I would imagine that increasing maintenance costs were responsible too. There was an old circuit board that wore out and they had to completely redesign it from the ground up with more modern electronic components. That cost 3 million pounds, if I remember correctly.

@Porrly Don't be a fool. The Concorde was just one of many planes that could take you anywhere you wanted to go. It would do that at a very high speed but could only take 100 people at a time.and therefore was very inefficient as a 747 could hold 4 times the amount. Taking speed into account and capacity you would need more then two Concordes to take 400 passengers acoss the Ocean in the time it takes one 747 to do that. So i would say the 747 replaced the Concorde.

for those who think it was Airbus that grounded this beautiful aircraft your wrong. Airbus as nothing to do with Concorde. It was British Aerospace that maintained the BA Fleet. It was Air France that stop BA flying Concorde because AF said they were retiring Concorde because they had continuous problems due to poor maintenance. If AF let BAe maintain their Concorde fleet it would be still flying so blame Air France. All this is FACT!

There was an initial effort to keep G-BOAF in airworthy condition, but the cost basis proved insurmountable. Concorde is not like a vintage WWII prop fighter, where one or two skilled mechanics, equipped with the proper tools, could easily keep it in flyable condition. It took the whole of BACE's efforts, and Airbus' mtx support, to keep the fleet operating. The costs just couldn't be justified to do the same for a single aircraft.

Yes of course in the end this was a major factor but at the start Concorde's service fuel prices were not much of a factor I may be wrong however i believe it may have been more economical tnan the boeing 707s of the time. Countless millions in revenue was lost because of overland speed restrictions and flat out bans that made transcontinental services impossible. As a Pilot and aviation enthusiast I am aslo deeply saddend by the loss of this beautiful Aircraft.

@mcdonpm Firstly, the flights that were obstructed were the INTERcontinental flights. Concordes semi-TRANScontinentals between DC and Dallas were operated by an American carrier, lest you forget. And also, you seem to forget that the Brazilians, Bahrainis, Indians, and Saudis did their fair share of "bitching" about the noise as well. So instead of whining about Americans, and belittling yourself, why not praise the cooperation that allowed her to reach 27 years of transAtlantic service?

@01276609329 The only reason the Concorde wasn't allowed to land all over in the U.S. is because of our citizen's outrage over the idea of the sonic boom happening daily... they don't understand that the Concorde can be flown subsonic- so they over-react to over-hyped news stories- just as you reacted to the over-hyped NY story in the UK news. The nose came off 7/1/08 & was totally repaired and returned to the Intrepid Museum for its reopening 1/8/08. Typical media over-hype. 2 yr old news, BTW!

@barthoedemaker Sorry, but you have no idea what you're talking about. Fuel usage between two such engines would NOT be a linear function, and there's factors than just displacement and cylinder count that would contribute to fuel use over a given distance: velocity, torque, payload, intake air density, ambient temperature, acceleration, etc. That's something even an 8th grade physics student should be able to figure out. lol
