I flew on Concorde from NY to London. It was sensational ... I will never forget it. It’s like being in a Ferrari with wings. I sipped my Champagne and looked out over the wing at the curvature of the earth. Staggering.

I can't believe this majestic piece of art is gone. Imagine that the Concorde only ever had one crash. These current airliners have a bunch of crashes and are still kept in production. I think without a doubt the Concorde should be brought back, despite it's enormous prices & costs. It's worth paying because it brought our spirits up. What a legendary aircraft.
@GuillaumeG-oz3hz3 жыл бұрын
The thing is, it didn't flew that much compared to Boeings or Airbuses. I think only 20 planes were made. And it flew after the crash, up until 2003, so the crash is not the reason. But I agree, it's the kind of crazy achievement that is worth doing, even if it's not as profitable... I can't believe that we were able to build that in the 60's, and so far it's the last supersonic commercial plane. Can't we do better 50 years later ?! Like, just as fast, but cheaper, safer ?
@MythicalPlayer_2 жыл бұрын
The main reason is the cost, using it as a commercial airplane would lead the company in debt

The Concorde... the greatest civilian supersonic jet ever built. The Concorde could fly over twice the speed of sound, and fly up to 60,000 feet in the atmosphere. She could fly faster than the earth could rotate, and, thus, could leave London and arrive in JFK prior to the time she left London :) ... I know that this is hard to understand, but London is about 5 hours ahead of New York. Since the Concorde could fly this distance in three hours, if it was 6 pm when the Concorde left London, it would only be 9 pm when the Concord arrived in New York, instead of 11 pm :) The normal flight time from London to JFK would take @ 5 hours, but the Concorde could fly this flight in @ 3 hours.) There are some nice clips of the Concorde from the cockpit... This is a marvel of a jet that I wanted to fly, but it just never happened.... Maybe, it was just best. I did walk through one of the Concordes, and one of the Tupolevs TU- 144, supersonic jets in the Technical Museum located at Sinsheim, Germany, all the way into the cockpit. The windows were very tiny, and the view from most windows was blocked by the massive wings. Maybe I didn't miss as much as I had thought.
@sanjulienne9 жыл бұрын
+George Black The return flying time from London is nearly 7hrs (6hrs and 47 min and 3,450 miles, Paris is an hour more). Concorde typically left London in the early morning to allow a full day of work in NYC. In the last several months the departure time was changed to approx. 6:30pm arriving at JFK around 5pm.

There was an occasion, many years when Concorde was still flying, when BA had to guarantee an aircraft, if a flight was overbooked, for the passengers. To the astonishment of the "overbooked" passengers, Concorde rolled up. Yes, that made their day, no matter how short the flight was! A feat of engineering brilliance by the British and the French. Ferrariman601 the nose cone was designed to help the plane break the sound barrier, as the plane travels through the air at high speed there is a build up of heat too, the nose cone has a point on it to disperse the heat, it also helps reduce the noice from the sonic boom, the only reason the nose cone raises and lowers is to help the pilots see at take off and landing I should know this information quite well as my grandad helped to build it, he worked on all of the concord fleet including the prototype that many said would not be able to fly at all

I used to work for the British Aircraft Corporation in the 1970's, did an Apprenticeship there, they did used to take workers up for Test Flight's, needed ballast to simulate plane being loaded, didn't get chance my self but know a few people that went up, did see quite a few of the British Concorde's take off for their maiden flight, pilots would always do a circuit and come back in along the runway around 300 feet with nose and undercarriage up then put it into a power climb up and away at the end of the runway, awesome sight and noise! 🙂 Wonderful memories!
