I made kitchen countertops with concrete in two massive sections weighing about 700lbs each. Couple of tips to layer on to this video from my experience would be to tape the melamine before pouring in the concrete. This prevents moisture from warping your mold and keeps your edging true. I also used a rag to run a thin layer of paste wax around the corners before the silicone. This made silicone clean-up a breeze. I would also recommend leaving your countertops in the mold for a few days so they can cure and increase in PSI before removing. This will help prevent chipping corners and edges when the concrete is still soft. Hope this helps anyone looking to tackle this project

More fluid concrete mix, and more agitation. And tape the bottom surface, then you can peel the blobs off at the end. I would not recommend relying on epoxy fixing to hold the sink to the concrete. There is really no problem drilling concrete, but as you've glued the sink on, I would support from beneath. The weight of the sink plus a full load of water is going to be around 50kg, too much for glue alone. The result looks great and the video contained useful information, thank you.

Excellent vid. I have a question, could I pour a thin layer of concrete over plywood then epoxy that giving it a concrete look. The reason is I’m a kitchen countertop and I don’t think I can reinforce the cabinets.
@BYOTools4 жыл бұрын
Great to hear Jared. I would say you could but just dampin the plywood slightly with some water because if you don't the concrete might dry out to quickly and reduce the strength of the concrete. Thanks for watching and hope you subscribed.

whats the difference between cement and concrete?
@BYOTools4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ted. Basically a bag of concrete is made up of multiple ingredients. The most important ingredient is cement. Cement is the true binder that makes the mixture rock hard after you add moisture to it. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
@qwerty-yy9ol4 жыл бұрын
Cement is like the flour, concrete is the cake.
@mrbinks104 жыл бұрын
Cement refers to an inorganic binder to hold aggregate together. Concrete is cement, stone, and sand; whereas mortar is cement and sand. The most commonly used cement is Portland cement, which is a calcium silicate compound, although there as also other types such as calcium aluminate cements. Additionally, most modern cements have additives, polymers, and fibers added to improve properties.

Come on... You can do better than this. You had a great DIY project going until you added the epoxy to what should have been a cement slurry mix to fill the very large air holes caused by poorly mixed cement that was to dry to vibrate the air out of. And if you have to ask why the epoxy was a bad idea, then you need to find a hobby better suited to your talents. Try to keep in mind that people view these videos looking for good practical advice, and for basic “HOW TO” instructions for simple add value home projects. They don’t come here for poorly thought out and executed Craft Projects, that will devaluate their homes at the time of sale.

Plenty of folks come to these types of videos to learn something. So, I'll ask. Why is epoxy a bad idea here? I legitimately do not know.
@slizzardman5 жыл бұрын
@@belavet Jeff will hopefully correct me if I'm wrong, but the main problem was that the holes were not filled before the epoxy was put on. The issue with doing this is that the epoxy is clear, so you will be able to see all those holes. If that's what you want, no problem, but if you want a clean finish that looks professional then you have to take a moment and add a thin layer of slurry over the top and exposed edges. This isn't rocket science and I was surprised that this step was skipped. I was also extremely unimpressed with the way he went about his degassing of the concrete. This probably wouldn't be necessary if the concrete was mixed to be slightly looser (flow control additive > extra water) and was more effectively vibrated, which isn't all that difficult... just clamp a few cheap orbital sanders underneath and leave them on for a little while. You can also use cheap electric motors with an off-center small weight on them for a stronger vibration, and between that and a little bit of working the surface during the vibration you can smooth things out quite nicely and end up with a very small number of surface defects that are easily filled afterwards (if any are present at all). Sealing the concrete with Epoxy is fine, such finishes are very durable, but getting rid of bubbles with a blowtorch works WAY better than that heat gun... and you may need 2-3 coats to get a perfect finish, with sanding in-between each coat and a burn stick to fill any small defects from the first coat. OP was using what he had on-hand, which I am not sure is a great excuse since a torch will cost you maybe 30 bucks, work MUCH more effectively, and will last for many, many jobs before requiring a new gas container (also mad cheap)... and when you don't have epoxy to torch you can sear meat with it for extra funsies.
