House is looking great! Just became your neighbor a month ago. I grew up in Clark Fork and decided after 30 yrs of big city life, I was ready to get back to the simple life. Homesteading completely off-grid is such a wonderful feeling of accomplishment. You're family is killing it. Love watching your content because I know whatever works for you, I know will work for me as well since it's the same climate. Hope you've been weathering the heat ok this summer!

From that brief glimpse of your trip to the shore, the scenery reminded me of highway 101 south of Crescent City -- the redwoods plus the beach. If you get to the Crescent City area and want to see some fairy tale redwood scenery, from Highway 101, go east on Elk Valley Road, then veer right on Howland Hill Road. Keep following it. It will take you into the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. There are some redwood scenery that are straight from fairy tale illustrations.

Good job with all the do it yourself, but for others thinking about the how to ( obviously you can't go back and undo what's done) grinding the footing is a total waste of time and whatever you put on top of it (poured concrete or CMU) will not bond as well as it would to a rough surface. The top of your foundation needs to be level and flat for the wood framing, but a slightly rough surface on the footing is good.

Thinking about your use of gravel in the bottom of your root cellar, I understand that your use of “road base type gravel”, with the inclusion of fine grit, shall reduce the ability for water to travel through to the bottom of your pit, to then be able to pump the water out, if you ever get water down there.. I understand that it would be advisable to use a course grade of washed, screened, round gravel, with no fine crushed grit included. Water is able to travel through the empty spaces between the gravel. In road base gravel, the fine grit is designed to fill those spaces and “glue” the crushed gravel together, so that is does not move.

Where I live (MI), building footings must be poured to a depth of 36" in consideration of the frost line. You must be in the part of Idaho with a 6" frost line. The frost line map I looked at shows parts of Idaho at 6" for about half the state and 36" for the rest. Bet you're glad you didn't have to dig and mix concrete for 36" footings.
@ZrubekFamily
@ZrubekFamily 2 жыл бұрын
The footer is well over 36" down.
@ctbcubed
@ctbcubed 2 жыл бұрын
@@ZrubekFamily Are you sure? The root cellar is for sure, but the rest appears to be 6-8" below grade. When he did the connector between the house and garage, the footing appeared to be 6- 8" thick. Then he did poured walls on top of that. If you look at the video where they time lapse the main house build in 15 minutes, the footings again appear to be 6-8" thick with poured walls formed above grade on top of those footings. To build that house where I live, those footings would have to be excavated to a minimum of 36" (typically 42") due to our frost table extending to 36". If he's in the part of Idaho with a 6" frost table, then all is well.

Looking great as usual. I guess I have to make a suggestion - with all the concrete ya'll place you should really consider going to Harbor Freight and pick up either their small "drill power size" or larger motor powered concrete vibrator. I have one of each, and it has made pouring all my concrete projects around the house much easier, with far better results. They are not expensive. I think the "drill" powered one is around 100.00.

You definitely need your own merch. How do you like it up there in Idaho? I've tried to convince my husband that's where we need to retire, since his mother and sister both live up there, and he says he doesn't want to live where it snows. I think he just doesn't want to be that close to where his sister lives! LOL They don't get along. Heh. I've almost convinced him about the Appalachias, though, even with some snow there every year. Where did you go fishing? It looks similar to the area off the coast of Oregon where they filmed Goonies, with those large rocks.
