It was thanks to you saying to level uneven areas of the lawn using sand instead of dirt that I was finally able to get a walkable back yard. When I used dirt it kept washing away. The risk of spraining an ankle while mowing has been eliminated. Thanks LCN!

Hi im a long time fan and have been watching your videos for years. Could you do a video series on how to grow grass in sandy soil? I live in the transition zone and my lawn is turf type tall fescue but it really struggles to fill in my yard compared to the weeds. I thought id ask because i didnt know if your lawn training program or published books had a section for my specific situation. At any rate keep up the good work i love your videos!

I think the sand you're thinking about is Polymeric sand that turns sticky when wet, we usually brush that between pavers back in the day, not sure about now. But that would turn the surface of the soil into flaky stuff. when you wet the sand it clumps together into large chunks and hardens

Nice video, I live in Crown Point! It's a little rough here now, some lawns are going dormant. My front patch is shaded and it's not too bad. My unfriendly neighbor is a lawn care nut and he's fighting it with tons of water and a bag of tricks. I would love to know where these properties are so I can drive by sometimes.

Enjoy the information and the updates. I have some cool season grasses in my backyard (Central Arkansas) underneath shade trees. Bluegrass, some TTTF, and Red Fescue I believe. Being in the transition zone do I treat these like cool season grasses or because of where I am treat them like warm season grasses? Also, need some good tips on the lawn looks kinda thin and some small bare spots ?

How much sand can you add at a time without messing up KYB growth to level out a smaller 10 - 15 foot low area that is probably 6-8 inches lower (gradual depression) ? Can the grass grow out of it if done over a period of say mid August through November 1st with ample rain/watering ? Or should I use premium top soil in the same manner for that amount of depth ? I would like to level it with out killing my finally decent 2nd full year of growth of premium KYB. Reseeding it is a PITA -esp on a crap clay ground and KYB's 30 +day germination/ crappy dry mid August - late Sept planting season.

My roto tiller had a hell of a Time getting into my yard yesterday because it was so hard and compacted I bet if I added sand it would help my yard and clay out and not make it "concrete " I'm doing a full renovation by hand no equipment on 8,895sq ft😢😅💪🙏

Allyn, next time you spread some sand on a lawn please use a compaction probe instead of a stick to test it.

it will be best to incorporate some organic material into that sand such as peat moss or even good clean "lawn soil" from the big box store. (not top soil because that can contain weed seeds) Then lay the sod on top of that

I really don't ever recommend compost for a lawn. You never really know what's it in or now "strong" it is nutrient wise. Some compost can burn up the lawn. My question about sand leveling is after I level and use the broom to expose the grass blades to poke through in a two tree weeks that’s great. But can I overseed in the fall over the sand?

Yes of course you can and don’t forget by that time the sand will already be sunken down below the top soil and grass bed level. Also throw down some RGS after sand leveling.

@thelawncarenut I've been looking and have not found a solution to this question I am gonna ask. I live in Chicago and I have a ton of damdelion fluff/seeds all over in the crevices of my lawn. And where I am most irritated it is, is all over my rubber mulch. Now these didn't come from my lawn but actually a home that is now vacant because the home owner was elderly and died. How can I easily get rid of these without disturbing my rubber mulch?

These sand becoming concrete people are hilarious. Concrete hardens because it contains portland cement. The stone is just an addition to add strength. You notice I said stone, not sand? That's another level of wrong these people are. Concrete doesn't even have sand as its aggregate. That would be stucco. But the funny thing as it pertains to lawncare is that adding sand on top of heavy clay has the exact opposite effect that they claim it does. It's pretty much my standard practice, when I have a spot that is crusted over clay where my Bermuda refuses to spread, to break it up a bit and then add about a quarter inch of sand. Keep it moist, and the Bermuda fills it right up.
