Beautifully done and explained, Mike. Two things struck at me 1. the precision of your hammering. Watching you etching out a line with your hammer with the first block and i thought to myself: there's no way the cement block will break right at that etch. It did. 2. You weren't wearing any safety goggles. Obviously you aren't an amateur. And i am genuinely curious if there was a striking techniques with your hammer that you could demonstrate on future videos.

The crack in the top course of block is because the concrete top expands and contracts. If the concrete is allowed to enter the cores of the top block it drags the block along with it as it expands and contracts with the changes in temperature. The wider the concrete top the greater the more movement you will have. It only takes a fraction of an inch to break that bond in the mortar. Did I get that right Mike?

I have an honest question. I'm a stone Mason like yourself and every stone I set I dampen it with a sponge or hose. Why when you set block you don't need the moisture ? Wouldn't that help strengthen it up by pulling the mortar in as it dries?

When adding water to Portland cement, either as part of a spec. mix, or a field mix, how do you know if the Portland cement went bad - besides it being a hard block? Are there any obvious indications when it is in powder form? I've had it where the Portland cement never hardens.
