Steve…when you find a full shell with concretions, keep in mind that the shell could still be filled with black powder, which could still be highly explosive. Be careful, and I’d highly recommend that you contact Aquachigger or others with experience for advice on how to handle fully intact shells.

As long as you don’t put heat on it it will not explode. Hitting it will not make it go off and no sand blasting.

The method for detonating civil war artillery shells is vastly different than the method used today and I doubt after being underwater for 100 years that the black powder fuse and the black powder is still a viable explosive.

Agree! I am still careful when I get next to the shell but most are inert. I have had some powder still active inside!
