The way they implemented alcohol withdrawal as a game mechanic is really creative.

Agreed. In a lot of movies/games alcoholics can just put down the alcohol without issue/no side effects. Really it is hell on earth and it is interesting to see it worked into the gameplay.

@@MrHammers Not my opinion but to explain the "disdain": People like chocolate and steak but the two don't mix well in a blender. My thoughts? C1/C2 are different foavors. C2 is not the best but it is fun. I'll take "bad" or stupid over boring. The developers in a post mortem said that they took a gamble on what people liked in the first game as that game teetered between realistic and ridoculous and not being able to decide which approach was expected for a sequel. Half way through they sort of collectively thought they had made the wrong choice in terms of direction but also decided it was too late to turn back and wen't all in. In regards to the levels they just made whatever seemed cool and then tried to find a way to connect them or write around them to give an excuse to get the player there. Another side effect of this was something fun like combo meter doesn't exactly enhance or mesh well with the horror aspect. The game lacked focus and the team working on singleplayer and multiplayer were stretched too thin as well. In trying to appeal to everyone they ended appealing to less. They did sacrifice most of what made the original stand out from the rest and what has led to the renewed interest in the fiest game. If you Google it you can find out there was a plan on making a third one that passed off the second game as a bad dream/hangover/trip and would have been a rebootquel aping Silent Hill.

What I never understood is why Ethan and Rosa got completely different character models from the first game. If you play both games back to back then the immersion really takes a hit. The Ethan one I can understand, in the first game he was a well groomed, clean shavened, slightly rotund guy. Makes sense for being a decently respected FBI investigator who probably doesnt do a lot of taxing physical work. But in Condemned 2, he has longer hair, an unshaved beard, and is clearly a lot thinner and physically fit, because he has been living a rough life on the street, beating the shit out of people, his changes all make sense, at least to me. But Rosa looks like she de-aged like 20 years.... that one doesnt make sense.

The combat in C2 is amazing! It takes everything the first one has and expands upon it in many ways. And the story, for better or worse, was always going to end up like it did. It was made by the same people that made the first one. The first one teased you with the supernatural, the second one embraced it. And, honestly, I like homeless Ethan, it makes sense for someone who went through all that crazy shit from the first game, to end up like that.

Been looking forward to this since your first Condemned vid dropped. Glad to see you putting some respect back onto Condemned 2’s name. Personally this game stuck with me far more than the first. Was still in my teens when I first played it and the atmosphere is still one of the best. It was one of those horror games I was genuinely too scared to play at times and so much of the imagery and level design has stuck with me for years. Considering just how ravenous this gen is for rereleases and HD updates, I’m amazed this and Condemned 1 haven’t had the upscale treatment yet. Feel like this would be a perfect switch release today and the gaming landscape of today would be far more welcoming to this brand of survival horror.

I love this game with a passion, due to it improving on what the first game had and building on top of it. Although back on the Xbox 360, the disk I had for Condemned 2 was a bit messed up (but it was playable). I will never forget the time I managed to make my way through the lodge part without even knowing where the hell I was going (because the map was invisible and only NPCs and items could be seen). It was definitely annoying, but I've never been happier beating a level until that moment.

I somewhat disagree: paranormal stuff in the original was a lot more restrained and tastefully done. It was still unclear how much of all that shit was real and what actually happened at the orchard/in the school, as the protagonist could see things somewhat different from their true form. It never crossed the line, where semi-paranormal or outright paranormal stuff became overblown, overexplained or overexposed, thus, helping connect normal and paranormal. The sequel, on the other hand, adds silliness to the mix and makes a nice mystical thriller into a Hollywood-esque action adventure. There's a huge gap between little instances of paranormal and... Whatever crap was smeared all over this game. The mere fact something like that happened doesn't mean one should switch to an 'anything goes' mentality.
@whoelsebutmeofcoursei

I haven't played it yet, from your comment it sounds like the game suffered from a big pet peeve I have: Tarantinofication. To transform/make a game as a half-ironic b-movie whateverploitation genre thing-thing. So lame and overused. I hope it's just my impression, 😟!
@JohnSmith-km4sv

I feel like it'd be hard to do a whole other game and just flirt with the paranormal again without pissing off a large portion of the audience. I feel like embracing it and offering up some explanation was the best course of action, but this is also something controversial within Monolith themselves, not everyone in the dev team liked the direction of the sequel so I totally can see where you're coming from
@robertusher5612

@@MrHammers I think it could work for a new sequel in universe. Think of it as returning to roots like Resident Evil did. RE7 was more restrained and dialed back with the craziness and ended up revitalizing the franchise. If you continue Ethan’s story from Condemned, you can’t go back to the normality, but if you focus on another agent in another city, you can still have the Oro being a thing but make the plot focused on something else on the outside realms of supernatural without going full in.

Condemned 2 is awesome in its own way, but I think I would've liked it more as its own game instead of a sequel to Criminal Origins. With Ethan's total change of appearance, voice & personality, they might as well had given a new protagonist in Bloodshot. I didn't care for the supernatural aspect of the original and still didn't care here so I wasn't as invested in Bloodshot's story. The combat was easily my favorite part about Bloodshot eventho it lessened the tension. I totally agree about the Black Lake Lodge stage.

I enjoyed this game despite its story shortcomings. What I thought would be the battle of attrition or struggle with Ethan’s alcoholism and his demons from the events that unfolded in the first game turned out to be a Rob Zombie/Indigo prophecy jump of plot that was all over the place. There were some good levels like the museum and lodge levels though. Combat was also greatly improved and it feels personal and not as clunky or jank. Multiplayer was also really fun with its multiplayer modes like Bum Rush and Crime Scene. They even brought back the infamous Farmhouse from the first game into it! Anyways good review, this game or (franchise) doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

@@MrHammers Yep, it was my initial impression when I first played the game right after the first one. And yeah those were pretty good, I mean the first game kinda hinted at something like that but I wasn’t expecting it to go off rails so fast. Either way, I still enjoy the game for what it is and I think it has that charm to it that’s hard to hate. I would say the last mission where you have to use guns is pretty awful though, it wasn’t fun shooting at enemies, especially ones with Kevlar vests that don’t react to your bullets. The best solution is if Jace Hall sells the rights to a competent indie studio that can carry its legacy.

Heartbreaking a third game has not been made. Wish there was a petition or something to convince them we’d love a third game. A well done movie in this universe would be fantastic. Not even dark dystopian psychological thrillers nowadays

It truly is that Banger of a crazy but wacky game. You did pretty damn well with this explanation video on the game's lore and everything it just makes me realize how much it had and how much a game like that can never be made again and why we should cherish it mostly. Thank you.

The bear chase sequence should go down as one of the best set pieces in video game history. Here's why... A big issue with gaming set pieces is developer's inability with balancing player freedom and making sure set piece moments aren't missed. Games that take over the camera so that a visual isn't missed robs players of their agency and immersion. Set pieces that are too open are easily missed when a player sees a squirrel or speck of dust in the other direction. By properly designing the cabin's structure and obstacles, the player doesn't miss a single moment that the bear chase sequence offers. The linear pathing naturally leads the player to see every moment that the bear appears. It's a short, intense, and very sweet concentration of high tension, suspense, and fear. It's perfect and stands out through both games and gaming in general.

Found your channel from the Call of Juarez retrospective video. I had a strong feeling you would have reviews for the Condemned games :). I remember playing the demo for this on 360 when I was probably 10 or 11. I was terrified and also enthralled by it. Then a a few years ago I played the original and it became my favorite horror game. 10+ years after the demo though, and I've still never played the sequel. I have been holding out hope it would become backwards compatible on Xbox, but I think it may be time I buy a disc on ebay and break out the old 360. Anyways, I'll be back once I've played the game because I don't want to spoil it for myself!

Multiplayer in this game for the Crimescene mode is unmatched. Fight in tight paths in a dank basement or hiding in a pitch black bathroom as two cops walk by looking for the evidence just for you to slam your sledgehammer into one of their skulls. It was unparalleled. Makes me want to make my own game just to replicate it.

Magic Theatre was one of those levels I wanted to go on and on. First time playing Condemned 2 I could feel the devs wanted to do something big with that one, but I guess the clock was ticking. It lasts 10 minutes, but I always look forward to see those creepy women nailed to the walls, the crazed ticked vendor, and what could've been again. Condemned 2 also convinced me in a definitive way to ALWAYS ignore "skip X entry of this franchise" fans.

It's one of those levels that sticks with you even though it is so short, the women on the knife throw boards were fantastic designs. And I agree 100%. Kinda why I'm excited to play call of Juarez the cartel, people shit on it and I want to see why for myself
