Condenser Microphone vs Shotgun Microphone - Rode NT1 vs. Deity D3 Pro

Today I am comparing a condenser microphone vs shotgun microphone. Specifically the microphones I am testing are the RODE NT1 vs Deity D3 Pro. Both condenser mic and Shotgun mic are great sounding but are quite different. The Rode NT1 condenser mic has a very rich sound, but the Deity D3 Pro Shotgun mic is a lot more versatile. Which mic sounds better? A condenser microphone or a shotgun microphone? In this video I compare these two mics against each other, which are the RODE NT1 microphone and the Deity D3 Pro microphone. These mics are quite different but they sound very similar. Overall I think the Rode NT1 condenser microphone sounds better. Do you prefer the Rode NT1 or the Deity D3 Pro?

haha yes, the slowing down and lightening the mood with some humour - all things I am actively working on for sure. Harder said than done, but when I look back on my very first videos i believe there is some improvement. As long as I keep making videos everything should get better over time. Hm yes that is something i didn't do. I just try and record when background noise is to a minimum but that would have been a good thing to test. Maybe next time haha.

They sound similar when close, but i think the NT1 actually sounds better when farther away.

I think you are right. I’m going to try and record a video or two with the NT1 just out of frame, like I normally do with the Deity.

What do you think about the Rode video mic ntg currently at Best Buy for $250? If you've had a chance to use it that is. I like that it has two capsules in case one of the capsules clips but I haven't tried it yet.

hi there and im very sorry about the late reply - unfortunately i dont know too much about that mic specifically, but i seem to recall a review comparing multiple Rode mics and generally they werent the best overall for the money you were spending. best bet would try to find as many reviews/ comparisons as you can on it to see if its worth it for you

8:44 only 4db vs 84?? you have a mix up with self noise and signal-noise ratio here i guess

Yes one microphone reports it as Signal-to-Noise Ratio and the other Equivalent Noise Level, but i did some searching and found information indicating that these were the same thing, just named differently; however, I may be wrong, in which case i appreciate you pointing it out and if you had any information about the two that you could share with me id love to follow up on it :)

​@@TymekStolarz Hi ,I appreciate the audio comparison of the shotgun and Rode NT1 because I am planning to get one for myself. Here are some info I have gathered: Signal to Noise ratio(SNR) can be used to calculate a microphone's self noise and vice versa, if you know the sensitivity value of the same. But they are not the same parameters to be compared. Normally, self noise or equivalent noise level of a shotgun is around 18db . Large diaphragm condensers like NT1 usually has much lower self noise. So the comparison should be 4db vs 18db if that makes sense. SNR of a mic with lesser self noise will be higher. Higher SNR and lower self noise are preferred for a microphone. The actual science is more complex, hence these are not textbook info. Hope this makes some sense though.

I'm agree. NT1 sounds much better. I don't know audio tech but, if we put shotgun little bit away (out of frame), there will be probably a much smaller difference between NG1 and Shotgun. What do you think?
