Finally! This video is very clearest and most helpful resource I have found so far on this topic. I have gotten better in Spanish were I started noticing that "If/then" statements can be very difficult to determine when to use different verb tenses and moods. This topic is so dense that a 20 minute video is probably the shortest a video can be to explain the distinct differences sufficiently. It's like the time I realized the verb "to become" had different forms in Spanish and you just have to memorize when to use which form.

Glad you found it helpful! By the way, I actually have a video on expressing "to become" in Spanish :)

@@Professorjason Thanks, I will check it out! I am still using educated guesses on ponerse, volverse, llegar a ser etc. Gracias, Profesor! "Si tengo tiempo esta tarde, lo veré" It's a great time to be language learning with resources like yours on youtube, and I even have a tutor who lives in Veracruz where we practice via video chat! 👍 Have a great day, and thanks again! ✌🙂

Hi there. I have enjoyed your videos. I have a unique case. I took 2 years of Spanish in high school and fell in love with it. Over the past 11 or 12 years I have studied all sorts of materials, flash cards, tons of audio, researched every spanish learning product and tried most, watch TV in Spanish...but didnt always do it religiously until the past 3 or 4 years. Now I study and watch TV in Spanish literally every day and still have a passion for it. I understand about 85% of what is spoken to me and about 95% of what I read. I'm always complemented on my accent in Spanish and told it is very native sounding (usually tell me Puerto Rican). However, when it's my turn to speak I realize how little it seems I know. I find myself not able to pull the right words or the correct tense to use, etc. I completely understand that I need someone to be able to speak to routinely and that is about the only way to break out of my plateau that I've been on for what seems to be years now. I have made efforts to find people to practice with and frankly there are many Hispanics in my town but I have no luck finding someone to practice steadily with. Any other advice you can offer for me to become fluent? Thank you for your time.

Travis Mills Hi Travis-I follow the advice of Benny Lewis and practice with native speakers via Skype almost daily. You can find language partners at mylanguageexchange.com, italki.com etc.Talking daily has changed everything for me. Best of luck!

oceanparkway1949 Hi there. There is no charge for Lang-8. For the other two, you can look through the profiles and then contact people via skype or email to see if they want to have a language exchange. As far as secure, yes, that has not been a problem for me at all.

Thanks for another great lesson. In my opinion, if you can master this sort of phrase, then you will have reached a really advanced level of Spanish. Being able to switch between present, future and conditional tenses mixed with the imperative is not easy. I have a lot of practice ahead!

Thanks, this is great. The exercises really help. For #2 of Exercise 1, could you also use vengas, as in "Si vengas a Houston..." instead of "Si vienes a Houston..."? Would using the subjunctive be understood or just sound confusing?
@nedygz
@nedygz 9 жыл бұрын
Steve Nunamaker no vengas would not be correct :/

Steve Nunamaker Nedy Gonzalez is right. You would not say "Si vengas..." The present subjunctive is not used after "si."

The explanation is excellent. But what is needed is to add one more summary slide indicating in a chart which combination of tense and mood is used in each case. Otherwise, the viewer has to replay the video multiple times to find and write that info down themselves.

Could you use a future progressive construction in section 2 "predicative conditionals"? Something like "Si llueve mañana, estaremos cancelando la excursión." or does that sound strange?

I looked up the word 'remember' in my Spanish dictionary and it had two words listed for the word remember 'recordar' and 'acordarse de'. What is the difference between these them and which one to use?
@Professorjason
@Professorjason 9 жыл бұрын
Ed williams None, really. You can use them interchangeably. One or the other may be more common in certain dialects, but they're both quite common overall. Just remember that acordarse de is a reflexive verb and is always used with the preposition de.

Professor Jason Thank you! Can I just ask what type of verb is recordar?
@legaleagle46
@legaleagle46 9 жыл бұрын
+Ed williams I'm not sure what the question means. It's not a reflexive verb because it does not take a reflexive pronoun or reflect the action back onto the subject of the sentence. It's simply a normal verb which usually takes a direct object.

Great video -thank you. If my sentence starts 'If I was ...' would it ALWAYS begin si fuera ? Perhaps in some cases another form of was would be used other than fuera?

I'm translating the phrase "Someone is taking us to..." but my question is, is the 'is' after the word 'someone' in my sentence ever translated in Spanish?
@legaleagle46
@legaleagle46 9 жыл бұрын
+ryan adams It can be translated (Alguien está llevándonos...), but Spanish doesn't use the progressive tenses as much as English does, so the preferred translation would simply be "Alguien nos lleva...".

One other observation here. Category 1 if-then statements also exist with reference to the past to show what frequently or usually happened in the past whenever certain conditions were met "(If it rained a lot, the area flooded"). In Spanish, the Imperfect Indicative would be used ("Si llovía mucho, se inundaba el área.") Incidentally with regard to Category 1 statements if-then statements, the Preterit can also be used in the if-clause if one is speculating about a resulting condition that may be true (or that might have been true in the past), when the sense is that one is taking as fact that the condition imposed by the if-clause really is or was true. "If his house flooded, he is staying with his sister until the damage is repaired," i.e., we're assuming or conceding the possibility that his house actually did flood, and we're speculating that he's currently staying with his sister as a result. In Spanish: "Si su casa se inundó, él se quedará con su hermana hasta que se arregle el daño (Spanish uses the Future where we use the Present to speculate about the present.)"

Very informative, but my problem doesn't seem to fit neatly into any of your categories. It has to do with asking permission. English sentences like "If you wouldn't mind, I would like to attend your class." or "I would like to sit here if you don't mind" seem wrong in either Spanish "Si clause ..." construction.. If I use the present indicative in the si clause, then I am limited to the present or future tense in the dependent clause. "Si no le molesta, me gusta asistir a su clase." I can't use gustaria. However, using the imperfect subjunctive in the if clause doesn't seem to convey the same idea. "Si no le molestara, me gustaria asistir a su clase.". Using quedar in the dependent clause doesn't help. There seems to be a change in meaning or emphasis.
