I can't believe that when this was first premiered, people disliked it... maybe because it was the conductor?

This is ABSPOLUTELY a BRILLIANT and FLAWLESS symphony! The only thing "wrong" [sic] with it was that the conducting for it, in its' 1897 premier, was left in the wrong hands of a drunken Alexander Glasunov.

Rachmaninov should be accorded a place among the top Russian composers including those from the 19th century .

Absolutely love the 1st Symphony by Rachmaninov. I very much think its sooo overly underrated and this was one of those symphonies that brought me into such close contact with the symphony form and all work Rachmaninov. Thank you Rachmaninov as you have made me a better human being.

I can't understand why there are no comments on this terrific performance of this powerful symphony. While I am not especially familiar with this conductor or this orchestra, I should be. Electrifying performance.

Absolutely love this symphony, my favorite from the Rock. The conductor looks like he was transported from the late 19th century.

Rarely played in concert halls nowadays this fascinating early work shows Rachmaninov on the verge of mastering the symphonic form.

This is a very solid performance of Rachmaninov's Symphony #1. Bravi! Very well crafted and haunting work by a 22 year old which reflects Rachmaninov's melancholy (perhaps induced by Tchaikovsky's death?). I am so glad he managed to climb out of depression following the horribly cruel criticism he received. Among the critics was César Cui who should have given him encouragement! Rachmaninov received help with his depression and gave us his Piano Concerto #2 followed by many other gems!

The premiere of this work was a disaster, sloppily conducted by someone who may have been intoxicated on the podium. Rachmaninoff never quite recovered emotionally even though he would go on to compose some of the most popular works in the Western Classical canon.

I've been searching for the identity of this piece for four decades now. Finally found it. At first I thought it was by someone like Sibelius, but then of course the only other credible alternative would have to be Rachmaninoff. I am awestruck by the power of this passage....

As I have clear;y noted before, both this first symphony AND Rachmaninmoff's first piano were absolutely THE FINEST musical compositions that he put out in his almost 70 years of Life! Why critics hated this really baffles me!

This is my first listen to Maestro Kochanovsky(as far as I'm aware) and my first listen to this symphony. I'm going through the Big composers I can think of and listening to their 1st... first;). So far I'm hooked. Peace and Much Groove

A well-conceived and well-conducted, standout performance. The orchestra acquits themselves nobly in what must be fiendishly difficult music. (I've heard A LOT of performances of this but not many truly successful ones.) I loved the finale, particularly. It reminded me of Svetlanov - one of the few who got it right. Bravo!

This comparatively obscure student work of Rachmaninov composed in 1895 should be heard more frequently.

BRAVI.

Rachmaninov's first symphony. At the time t was published, there was many critizism on this symphony, and Rachmaninov hated this work, and it was never performed again in his lifetime, but to be honest, it isn't that bad. Edit: english is hard

Ben tocada, equilibrada, contundent quan fa falta . Gràcies

Interesting formal hybrid. Not a classical symphony in the Haydn-Mozart-Beethoven sense, but so what. Closer to Liszt, Bruckner and Sibelius, so more of a symphonic poem. The negative criticism was unwarranted, of course, but that's hindsight. Evidently, Rach took it really hard, more so than he should have--Beethoven would have ignored it (and did). The demonic opening motif is easily the scariest sound in all of music, topping even Night on a Bald Mountain. Rach has to work hard to get away from the doom-and-gloom mood, though the motif recurs, making the opening movement sort of in sonata form. He returns to the mood of the opening at the end but that's not as scary. Stick with it. There's lots of good sound here.
