I have looked and looked for decades, and I still can't find the knees on a pair of BVDs. The original "suit of easy breezes", a loose fitting, beach wear style, made a lot more sense.

They're singing about a Union Suit made by the BVD Underwear Company that got the nickname of BVDs. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_suit.
