You brought up so many great points here. I initially got into this hobby for purely egotistical reasons and got sucked into the snobbery of it all. I spent a lot of money on fragrances I rarely wear and that no one appreciates outside of this community. I’m usually a free-thinking person but I got pulled in by the status aspect of collecting. That being said, I usually still appreciate niche fragrances more than designers, for the most part. Like you stated in the end, I now buy for the love of the art, creativity and for personal enjoyment.

You're very well reflected, and i like this kind of videos you put once in a while out because you're spot on. These symptoms appear when this hobby is getting out of hand.. not appreciating a good designer is arrogance.

Nice reminder to all those in this fragrance hobby. I have accumulated significant number of bottles during the 2 plus year period since I got hooked into fragrances. Started mainly with designers and currently purchasing more niche. On the side of niche, I would say you can tell that the quality is there over designers. Scent-wise, I buy whatever I like and not because of compliments or if other people will like them. Not into facebook, Instagram or any social media outside of KZbin so proud to say that I am not in it for the bragging rights/showing-off/etc. There really is no single rule to be followed to have the perfect experience in this hobby - be it collecting, finding only the best in class bottles, just wanting to smell good, treating perfumes as a form of aroma therapy, or even just to solicit compliments. Just be true to yourself, spend within reasonable limits according to your means and respecting other people's choices and you will be enjoying it more. After saying all these, I now feel justified to buy a couple more bottles ha ha. Cheers!

Collect based on your lifestyle. I started this journey 4 months ago and im allready cutting back. I work 5 days a week. When im done i either go to the gym, or straight home, turning on the tv and enjoy a good meal. Are fragrances really necessary for that kind of lifestyle? So i narrowed down to easy to wear and work safe fragrances which are 3 as of right now, plus 2 date fragrances and 2 in the boozy and wood category now for the fall if im outdoors. That's all i need. Also, an advice to those spend too much on samples. If you are ordering a bottle online, use Luckyscent. They offer multiple free samples of your choice. How many depends on how high the value of your order is. So far i've gotten 20 free samples of my choice from them.

You are so on point I was buying niche colognes like crazy and 9 out of 10 of them were stinky as hell. I just don’t get it when someone wants a fragrance that smells like old carpet, burning tires, molded rooms and then go aaaahhhhh

I always appreciate your videos because you are REAL! Love that. I love smelling Fragrances whether Designer or NICHE. Thank you for sharing your experience with NICHE SNOBBERY, becuase I never thought of NICHE Frags in that way. I can see how other do though. I can't really afford to own a lot of Niche frags, but I do enjoy smelling them so I buy samples for the fun of House discovery. If a Frag smells good and lasts long, that is what matters to me. Price is only a limitation not a factor when judging the actual scent. You brought a great perceptive of why you were buying lots of NICHE samples. For me, I don't buy samples for the next great compliment getter, but rather to discover a Frag House, or to find a new signature scent that is unique. I'm the guy that loves Nasomatto's Baraonda, and wear it genuinely because I love the scent for myself. Had I not bought those samples of Nasomatto frags I would have never known. I still buy Niche samples, but not as much as I used to because I, too , was neglecting my own collection of frags for the joy of discovery, so I've limited myself to buying samples only once a quarter. Last year, I bought a sample of MM Jazz Club on your recommendation and it is absolutely one of my favorites. Thank you , Sir!

You are amazing :)!!! Sometimes i saw some niche snob in Facebook groups looking down on people wearing designer and make sarcastic comments on others collections just because that individual owns mostly designer and cheap fragrances...TBH if someone rich drop 100grand on fragrances in one night just because he could, does it meant that he is much more superior than those collecting and using cheap fragrances for a long period of time? i guess not..but people would worship them like fragrance god who knows it all..it just does not make any sense..it is becoming that if you own many expensive bottles, you are immediately a fragrance GURU, which is not the case..just my humble opinion!! :)

I like how you address these points, which people really need to hear. Respect sir. You can use the same arguments with most items though i.e. buying designer clothes and looking down on those who wear “normal” clothes where in reality they look the same. It really does depend on why you buy frags though, for example I just spent £300 on Xerjoff Nio, but thats because it’s the best thing I ever smelt and i know others will love smelling it on me! I prefer the quality of niche, but I only buy frags that I will wear and are mainly inoffensive (most of my niche are Creed frags).

There should be a song for Niche Snobs. Even more, there should be an entire album for Compliment Getter. "Complement factor" probably hurt the perfume culture way more than niche snobbery. If you're wearing something you don't like or identify with just because someone on the internet thinks it will get you positive attention, you deserve and well-planted kick in the nuts.
@finefragrancefan8314
@finefragrancefan8314 6 жыл бұрын
I can not understand the obsession with and fuss about compliments. If you make this the only factor about a fragrance you will be disappointed a lot and you will miss so many great fragrances. Niche to me is about higher quality as well as, as the name implies, filling out niches that the designer fragrances, who must sell and appeal to as many people as possible, can not fill. It is about different ideas and weirder concepts that are not under the pressure of selling incredibly well. While I own and appreciate designers and would never be snobby, niche just offers a wider variety and more interesting concepts. Niche is not generally better than designers. They do different things and whether or not that is better is completely subjective. Hobbies and obsessions just are like this. One spends a lot of time, money and effort for something most other people would deem utterly insane. It is the same as building a miniature railway, being a hobby photographer with a great camera and equipment, tuning cars or an amateur chef that spends heavily on knives or such. As long as this hobby gives you satisfaction and happiness and you are doing it for yourself, not for others or an ulterior motive, I think it is good and healthy. Chasing the next compliment beast or panty dropper to me is futile. As you said, if you got one you do not need another one. If you like fragrances in general do not limit yourself to just one aspect of it. People that buy niche because it is supposedly rare and expensive in my eyes just have gotten the wool pulled over their eyes as much as people that only care for designers because of compliments.

Scent E, Great video! Since yhe start of me collecting frags,It has only been as a hobbly. I've had a great teacher in max forti,who since the beginning of my fragrance journey has schooled me on the very things you are discussing in this video. High price frags with qualitt ingredients does not equate to a better fragrance than something less costly. Ysl l'homme parfume intense a designer frag=$110.00 100ML smells just as amazing as Creation E=$400.00. Your spot on my friend😊! A2!

Great video brother. You covered some very important points. I am trying to stop purchasing fragrances for a while but I keep wanting more and more, I started with designers within a month I had all top designers but it got worse after discovering creed smw 2 months ago. I became addicted to the creed line and now I keep buying more I am currently at 13 creeds. Hopefully this is it for a while.

Some valid points and also I guess were all different because I have never and I mean never bought or worn a fragrance because I cared about getting a compliment or give a shit about what the person beside me thinks about my scent or ever think about what im wearing clothes wise and does it "match" or is it the right season lol I wear what I like the smell of and when I feel like wearing it.

Great video bro. Confessions of what triggers growth i.e.; mistakes/misconceptions/"traps"/falsehoods are best served when they are communicated to others so they can possibly avoid a few of these themselves. I'm funny because I'm a visual identity developer who believes a great deal in the power of perception, however it must be reinforced by quality, functionality, purpose, expectations and context.

Damn you were on fire! Great rant! Probably the best rant that I ever watched regarding the fragrance community. To a certain degree I guess I have been guilty of being a niche snob. I never thought that I am better than someone else when I'm wearing a niche fragrance and someone else is wearing a designer fragrance. But I am guilty of thinking the niche fragrances I wear are better than the designer fragrances my co-workers wear just because the fragrance I'm wearing cost more. I'm glad you mentioned Ryzfrag34 because Ryan is one of nicest, down to earth fragrance reviewers in the fragrance community despite having an enormous collection of mostly niche fragrances.

Awesome rant mate, 100% behind you on this topic!!! I love niche fragrances but if I can get a designer clone I will go designer unless the performance sucks. My favourite niche house at the moment is Masion Margiela Replica line, very unique especially At the Barbers, Jazz Club, Beach Walk and By the Fire Place. Penhaligans is awesome especially Sartorial, love aromatic fougeres but YSL Rive Gauche is an amazing designer alternative. My point is definitely look into niche but look for alternative designers too.

Good point! One pet peeve I have in the frag community is when people, mostly niche snobs, tell you to rather buy a decant of an expensive niche fragrance than to buy a cheap designer alternative because according to them, they cost the same. I don't know why people don't get that they may cost the same but a 100mL of a cheap designer fragrance will last you longer than a 10mL of an expensive niche fragrance.
@jeremymisener1630

I think the idea is you spray less of the more potent niche scent but most beginners are better off with a good-smelling 100$ scent

I don't think so, bro. The questions I mostly see consist of non-potent niche and a better performing designer scent. But yes, I also don't think it's a good idea to start a collection with an expensive niche hehe.

i agree with you.to some point.for me doesn t work to use designers or some niche .and i ve tryed alot.from chanel ,dior to rasasi.....or even jazz club(all sephora).harsh.harsh .everytime i use them i feel that i have o tone on my chest,and i have to cought.everytime that i use tiziana terenzi-nothing rong .so i have 11 so far from that brand.i have one creed -it s k,1 parfums de marly -k.killian ,tom ford private blend,l artisan perfumer,mancera ,montale,atelier cologne from niche world are the same with every designer .can t stand them.not for the smell....i got sick from them .so,niche it s better for me,but not all niche.....but i see your point in this video.for a person with no sensibility........but i feel that i m "better" because i use something that don t harm me.if an armani doesn t harm you now and it is bad for me,that thing could be bad for you in time.the fact that i can sense this harshness and you don t ,doesn t mean it is safe for you .don t know if you see my point here...i prefer to use more natural things....

I became interested in fragrances 3 years ago, when I bought Chanel Home Edition Blanche and La Nuit De L'homme, based on my own taste. I spent four hours at duty free, testing fragrances. Finally, I picked up those two. Then I starting watching frag reviews, realising there are niche fragrances, much superior than what I picked up. During these three years, I was buying fragrances partly due to KZbin reviews. However, today I ended up by having just two fragrances: La Nuit and Edition Blanche. This is a real story

levan beriashvili same here. you tend to realize in the long run the fragrances your personal taste gravitates to most are the ones you’ll always love. for me it was Dior Homme Eau, La Nuit, and Polo Red Intense and these were before i knew about KZbin reviews, and i still have these after swapping and selling many fragrances including niche

Wish that more niche fragrances worked out for me based on where I live (SE Asia) but the majority become very cloying in the 90F heat and high humidity. Only reserved for nighttime wear when I'm in air-conditioning. My go to juices need to be either citrus based or aquatics or I end up smelling like a hot mess.

Forgot to add, buy fragrances that suit your needs, I buy fragrances if the suit my needs and situation instead fo having 20 cold weather evening scents, what's the point? Buy 2 or 3 scents to suit hot/ cold, day/night, casual/formal and rotate them, importantly never blind buy and try them out 2 or 3 times to get the performance figured out. I think it's preference if you prefer niche fragrances that's fine as long as you don't look down on others. Technically I don't have many niche just a lot of luxury designers like Tom Ford and Dior private lines. But I like oud fragrances so I also get a lot of middle eastern niche. But I can't see myself paying over $150 a bottle that's crazy.

i own only designer fragrances, for me at the end of the day if you smell good & are getting great reactions from people / girls then that's all that matters really. I don't get why people hate on stuff like dior sauvage or for example D&G the one because apparently too many people wear them. Ok if you don't like the smell of sauvage that's fair enough but i get so many compliments from girls wearing it & not once yet has a girl said to me you smell like so many other guys. People hate on stuff like blue channel just to hate on it basically.

You make some really great points and I do agree with most of them but I think the “hunting” is the fun for most people in the community. It’s a hobby and if it weren’t fragrance then it would be something else so I say if exploring fragrance is what makes you happy (and you aren’t over extending yourself financially) then go for it. It’s another story if your bills aren’t getting paid because your spending so much money on perfume.

I don't know, I only own designer bottles, but I got to admit the best things I have smelled is niche. I agree that other people will most likely compliment you more on designers because that's what they're used to smelling. Oops I became a niche snob there.😄

The Scentrepreneur However they do make for an interesting conversation piece when I have guests over. I’m in full agreement that fragrances are an art form. As far as my position on the main theme of the video, I’ve always maintained that people in our community that exclusively resign themselves to strictly one group or the other are doing themselves a disservice because you’ll miss out on some really amazing offerings on both sides. My fragrance wardrobe is comprised of both niche and designer (about 60/40). Designer fragrances may not take the same creative risks or innovative offerings at times, but a great fragrance is a great fragrance. But I really get sick of smelling Dior Sauvage in literally every guy at my gym I won’t lie lol

What a great video man!! I see a few of reviewers that claims to be niche guys!! But that's the only luxury and high class thing in his life because look , speak and live like a regular people!! Always talking trash on designer an clones fragrances!! I never smell or owns Aventus!! But I have like 5 different cheap clones that give me crazy compliments!! They cost me a like $120 for all!! Aventus $300?? Heel noooo!!! Jaja!! I owns a bottle of a $16 dollars Franck Olivier Blue Touch and completely strangers came to me to tell me how good I smell!!

A lot of that snobbiness is psychosomatic. As you said, snobs equate price with quality. And it goes the other way. Just by being armed with the knowledge that a fragrance costs $50 or something will cause the snob to say it smells "synthetic". They don't actually THINK it does, it's almost as if they feel they're SUPPOSED to say that. Also, elitism is part of it. Knowing that a fragrance is so expensive that the average person can't afford it makes them feel better about themselves. This works in cars. It works in fashion and yes, it works in fragrances. It doesn't matter if the product is good, the fact that the person can afford it IS the statement. Too much of this in the FragCom

Thanks for nice video. I'm lucky I guess! I've been getting some samples (Aventus, Millésime Impérial, Cedrat Boise, Reflection Man, Tom Ford, Acqua di Parma), but to be honest, I think the Aventus and Cedrat Boise are to strong and not a fan of the smell. They other ones are just okay for me, except AdP Fico di Amalfi (that's a winner for me). I'll stick with my cheapies, designers and the one niche (AdP) fragrance :-)

Your reply is interesting to say the least but if a guy can easily spend between 700 and 1400 on a few hours with a woman, investing on few niche fragrances that would make him desirable for quality women for free would be worth dont you think? Besides it is fun to smell amazing just for my self esteem alone thus getting niche fragrances it is far more exciting. I love everything that increases power and social seduction.

Bees of St. Ambrose lol I was kidding to be honest. I definitely think there are great designer frags. Plenty of classics for sure. Fahrenheit back in the early 90’s got me loving fragrances. That and Drakkar in the 80’s as a kid started my obsession with frags.

do u think the people who say u go nose blind from aventus are in denial on its shit performance?lol,i know i was..i owned maybe 7 batches in total.each different in scent and performance goes from 1 hour half to 4 hours.iv tryed the unscented moisterizer,iv sprayed it away from nose area,and iv asked people can they smell it,now it isnt as bad as VIW and himalya which are 2 hour scents at best:),i couldnt accept something i paid so much for just doesnt perform.,,,i know theres lads reading this saying my batch works 10 hours or more lol....creed seem to have made an art outta batch variations.average joe like me buys 1 aventus?NOPE he now has 7 lol.so like the guy in video iv went full circle and now left my aventus and am useing my insurrection pure again.WHY ?the simple reason is i enjoy smelling it through out the day and its last for the day.something aventus couldnt do.

funny story, there is a semi-popular youtuber who i can't stand personally because he almost always trashes the designer scent and praises the niche scent. Even if the designer scent is great it doesn't matter because he'll say it's generic or it's overly synthetic and things like that. (scenario here) I know ppl say they only wear stuff they like and whatever thats why they buy niche but i'd say that's pretty arrogant to think that because you smell amazing doesn't mean you actually do. There are some niche frags that flat out stink and have a really high price tag, now how many ppl have to tell you that you stink before that arrogant self image you have changes? Honestly I think most Niche snobs are liars, they lie to themselves because of the money they spent. Wearing 300 dollar Shit scented water (oh but high quality shit for sure! This shit was taken from the rare Oreamnos americanus, we had ppl look for the only highest quality of shits) its still shit scented and a person can say that it's worth it to them i suppose because they think it's rare which it probably is since not many ppl want to smell like goat shit but the point isn't that it actually smells good, it's that a person believes it smells good because it is exclusive. Even if there were 1000 ppl who told that person that they stunk like shit, the arrogance that can sometimes come about from the niche snob is that "ppl don't know what good scents are" . The real question is where is the line? If you (hypothetically) liked/enjoyed smelling like mountain goat shit (which for all i know some ppl may) then where is the line where you smelling like goat shit and me not enjoying that smell, where is it drawn? That's really the line that i would like to see, because i've seen some youtubers praise some pretty effing gross scents but because it was from a niche line it got this weird hype which is pretty crazy, spending more for pleasing only yourself, that's like paying someone so i can jerk myself off

I loved reading this hahah, great point. The point could be raised that "our noses just aren't on that level" but I'd prefer never to get used to that level. I have family that own a farm and they can stand the smell of cow poop more than most, doesn't mean that they go out in public smelling like that. Only difference I see here is that our cow poop comes in a pretty 400$ bottle lol
@jaigovind99
@jaigovind99 6 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you! Who can justified to charge $400. + for a fragrance that's mostly composed of alcohol and synthetic ingredients! Creed is at the top of the list for this robbery. Its all hype. Their products are not that great, and their performance is poor. A bottle must cost them $15 to $25. max to make?!.... I hope they give a lots of their money for charity. Its like paying $1000. for a small wallet that has LV written all over it?! An industry for the elite. You do not have to pay that much to smell good! People like Mr. Andy TAUER are different. He is a true artist and passionate of fragrances.... He calls them sculptures...and his fragrances are fabulous and affordable for the quality you get. EX: his Tauerville collection. Do not believe the hype. You can get fantastic fragrances without breaking your budget.
