Hi Marco, great review! I've been playing wargames for a long time and definitely this is the best one. This game is so good that I show a friend how to play it in 20 min and that was the first time ever he'd played a wargame. Very fun and interesting system.

For ages, it was all about Squad Leader. Now we have 3 games that are competing for the crown of the great tactical WWII game.

Marco, I've enjoyed Conflict of Heroes for sometime now. The system is great and becomes very intuitive. My one frustration is that Academy Games' production standards are so high that expansions and new games in the series are introduced slower than I like. My chief comment though is your shirt. Is that a Napoleonic 20 counter and if so where can I get one?

yes it plays well solo too.

War game complexity hierarchy? Memiour 44 - Conflict of Heroes - Advanced Squad Leader (or Lock and Load by the sounds of it)..

@@antiussentiment Not arguing Andrew - I've never played or seen Lock and Load - but I would really be surprised if anything short of actual combat is more technical and complicated than Advanced Squad Leader (ASL). I do like ASL. For non ASL players here is a super-brief rundown of the markings on counters: the color of the number is important, the shape of the background on each number can be important, the background color can be important. Different units have slighltly different meaning on the placement of numbers on the counters. Stacking order counts. Hexes are tiny. Movement cost depends on whether movement is in the hex or along the he hex edge (as do do combat factors). The color of each of a pair of dice rolled each time can be significant. ASL is like the UNIX of boardgames. It is not only case-sensitive, but you have to mentally compile all of the rules each time you run it, then find out that one stupid error that feels like it should have better error parsing makes everything crash.

Oh Marco, I'm spellbound by your wonderful accent.. ~giggles~ I got a BEAR-ly played edition of this for AUS$25 at the local game clubs swap meet. The lady and I have played Scenario 1 three times now and we are both on board with your "light".. It's a fast paced, tense, low maintenance war game.. While I love the physical scale of the beautiful unit tiles, I do wish they'd used an artist to draw the board artwork. Computer generated/processed art always looks lazy and flat to me. My lady is a very keen Euro-gamer who will occasionally play one of my old Avalon Hill titles. But I get the feeling she's always going to be up for this. I imagine we'll spend the next six months playing though the scenarios, then look at getting Poking the Bear..
