Families of victims of the deadliest U.S. air disaster in nearly 25 years visited the crash site just outside Washington, D.C. on Sunday
They walked along the banks of the Potomac River near Reagan National Airport, close to where an American Airlines jet and an Army Black Hawk helicopter collided on Wednesday.
Authorities said Sunday they had recovered and identified 55 of the 67 people killed.

The helo routes need to change when traffic is incoming from that direction. A retired pilot who landed hundreds of times at that same airport said he always felt unease, and it was only a matter of time. Well, that time arrived. Why is it that blood must be spilled before proper action is taken.

The Potomac is approximately 2500 feet wide at the collision site . The flight path for helicopters is the bank on the Maryland side with a maximum ceiling of 200 feet . At this point the plane HAS to be much higher otherwise it is to low to make the runway The helicopter under any circumstance is NOT allowed in the center of the Potomac since it is the flight path for commercial airliners . Absolutely no private planes are allowed at Regan national airport . In 45 years of going to watch / photograph at Gravelly park I have NEVER seen a helicopter violate those rules . Typically they fly between 70 and 120 feet judging by the surroundings . The system was designed perfectly but it relies on pilots being professional , disciplined and competent . Only the best of the best should fly into Regan . Substandard DEI hires have no business there ,the stakes are too high . Thank you and god bless everyone

From a former CRJ pilot - RIP and prayers. The facts, including communications, ADS-B data, and videos, indicate that the crashes were likely due to : 1- DCA : 3 factors - ATC, chopper pilots, and light pollution. 2- PNE/Philadelphia: Spatial disorientation. 1st, DCA - The new restrictions on chopper transitions makes sense until DCA traffic is investigated. Why? The CRJ crash, and this additional fact: The day prior to the chopper killing the CRJ, to avoid a chopper there was a TCAS directed action (above 1000 feet AGL). A go around advised for a jet on final for 19. That said - A good hunk of the 1.8 million airline flights occurring annually, interact with transitioning military and police chopper flights. Safely, without incident - evidenced due to not hearing about them. Of course, one crash is one too many. Looking forward to the initial and final NTSB reports. Probable causes - ATC, chopper pilots, and light pollution. DCA, LGA, etc...are high workload. Especially on a circle to land approach, complicated by city lights. A pilot shouldn't need to look for traffic under 1000 feet ...while making a dog leg left, for a night visual, in city lights, At a minimum the pilots are simultaneously - Watching runway alignment, and aircraft speed, height, pitch, descent rate, and more = highest workload. Also, it's likely the chopper was on Route 1 - 200 feet max altitude published on the current chart. It crashed into the CRJ at 300+ feet. RIP. - 2nd - Philadelphia - I disagree with an explosion claim. Due to low ceilings, the "fire" was possibly aircraft lights. Plus, their gentle left turn after take off is dispositive to an emergency, or loss of control. However, making a left turn, yet told right, is an indication of spatial disorientation. They were in the soup/IMC - rather than turn right on course to 290 after take off from RW 24, they started a left turn. It's possible the left turn kept increasing in bank angle. So much that the aircraft finally flipped left, then dove in. Altitude was so low, that a spin didn't have time to develop. Data shows a rapidly increasing descent rate - Starting about 500 feet per minute, and ending at 10,000+ FMP. All the above are consistent with spatial disorientation. RIP.

I''m betting the medical jet had a catastrophic event such as an explosion soon after takeoff. From the optics, etc., and bias from too many years of acute care around lots of oxygen tanks. However the theory of the first flash being landing lights is intriquing and first I heard; quite possible ... and all from my chair; non-pilot, etc. I have faith in the NTSB.

The CRJ was not at fault. Landing is the most stressful part of an aircraft, and easy one of the hardest, most crucial parts of a flight, and you need all pilots present, laser focused, and paying attention to the runway at all times. Not searching for a helicopter that just might be in their path. Not to mention, the helicopter literally flew into the side/under of the CRJ, clearly, the helicopter and whoever was piloting the helicopter is 100% at fault. I 100% agree with your assessment
@im.empimp

DCA - helo - Another factor not mentioned is that there can be either 3 or 4 crew and there were only 3. Given all the known factors that you mentioned, and some other things that I've seen about the visibility that Blackhawk crews have when wearing night vision gear, it seems like a horrific policy to allow only 3 on a flight like this. DCA - ATC - Similarly, the ATC had a range of people who could have been working and one had apparently been allowed to leave early, which meant someone else had to double up on plane and helicopter traffic. (In another report I saw, it was implied it was the controller who was in charge of both the CRJ and Blackhawk). Again, given all the known factors, it seems there weren't enough controllers in place.

Her social media was scrubbed before the release of her name due to her political views and anti Trump agenda. The lesbian pilot was part of the dei program and moved up the ranks from private to captain in 2 years, which usually takes 5 and up. Ask any Blackhawk pilot if 500 hours is enough to fly in the most demanding airspace like dc and you’re get the same answer, NO The reason why she was trying to get certified was to be able to fly and train other dei pilots who under the regular training program would not pass to become pilots.

On our aircraft, to report our altitude, we have pressure altimeters, radar transponders, and ADS-b units, as well as GPS capabilities. All of these have limitations. On a flight today, these can all indicate a slightly different altitude. They all could be off from each other 5, 10, 50, 100 feet off from each other. At altitude its not a big deal. FYI the tower’s radar cannot independently determine the plane’s altitude. The readout a controller sees is given by the aircraft’s own transponder, and for accuracy depends on the altimeter (barometric pressure) setting dialed in by the pilots. If the aircraft was reporting incorrectly, it may have been because the altimeter setting was a bit off from current conditions.

Heard the Army/military UH60 had their ADSB shut off. Is this true? I don’t blame the Helo pilots if this is fact, I blame the folks who write Gov’mt. Procedures. Many are not even pilots. Also, has anyone noticed that in the replay of the tower’ screen-display that just prior to this tragedy, that same BH came too close to another commercial jet taking off to the north. The replay SHOWS the accident BH performing ‘fish-hook’ avoidance turns for another CRJ. Please tell me I am mistaken. Somebody, or remote control, was tempting fate. I claim this because the ‘avoidance maneuver’ of the earlier CRJ was very late (delayed) indicating it was too close for comfort. One sign of remote control is delayed reaction. Let me know please.

Performing training VFR maneuvers at night with TCAS off? The altitude cannot be determined at night due to spacial disorientation. It's imperative to use the aircraft's instruments when in poor visibility, especially at night when all of the lights become confusing. It seems the CRJ did see the Blackhawk and began to increase altitude, but obviously they didn't have time to avoid the collision. Someone needs to be court martialed.

According to Flight Trac Log from Flight Aware the Heli was at 200 ft on the entire route 1 until moments before the collision. Literally 2 data pings as it rose up into the CRJ 700. The fly by wire security is pretty robust, however micro processors that control the servos which actuate flight surfaces could be vulnerable. If ATC is showing 200 ft and receive no data than the Blackhawk gained altitude, could mean that the transponder system it's no longer communicating which could indicate some type of microcontroller malfunction or cyber control as well as a rogue controller chip. Communication with a controller could be done using a decentralized, towerless mesh Network which uses Wi-Fi access points and LoRa that relay transmissions down a path of access points as long as they had a map of those points through prior reconnaissance

It’s very clear that she flew the helicopter into the plane on purpose. There’s no need to try to blame it on the tower.

People are flown to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from Mexico? In a private jet? To receive medical care? Then they were to be flown back from North Eastern united states (almost Canada) to Mexico? In their private jet? Am I missing something, or is that about it?
