Heartbreaking that young soldiers are always used by sociopathic “leaders”. I see this young man as a victim, as well. My own father was used as a soldier at sixteen during WWII.

Some soldiers say they will be shot by their own people if they return to Russia. One said that his parents have already prepared his funeral. He saw himself and his comrades as already dead. Not since Stalin and Brezhnev has there been such a brutal dictator. someone, probably the Red Army, must execute him and try to establish some kind of humane government.

You know what's worse? WW2 Russian grunts running from the bullets of their superiors towards the enemy because that was the only way to run. If they faltered or turned around they were shot by their own officers. Many of them were boys wanting nothing more than going back home to their families. You can say that at least they were fighting the Nazis, but it still shows how brutal the Russian war culture is.

I lived in Germany throughout eighties/early nineties. When the Soviet Union broke up we started seeing very young Soviet (mostly Russian) soldiers begging for food, money, warm clothes, etc. Russian has a history of abusing their soldiers. I did not know how to regard this, then. I still cannot understand how their government could abandon them. They were left in foreign countries (where they did not speak the language) and given no resources to help them go home. I am definitely not siding with Putin's war. I just wanted to say that it is a horrific tragedy for everyone involved. I ache for the brave Ukrainian people who are so determinedly trying to protect their homes and families. I have so say I also feel sympathy for those young Russian soldiers who find themselves in an untenable situation. There really are no winners in this terrible situation.

Problem is Russian military also is highly corrupt and there's a lot of hands in that pot skimming from the top until it's all paper strength and in reality nothing is left. We see that with logistical issues already just a few dozen km's - if that - from the Russian border. Even before they crossed the border in some areas they had issues with food, and many only crossed in columns with 3 days of supply, and nothing following on.

I lived and worked in Russia from 2006 to 2007. I taught English to adult Russian students there at a language school. Some of them told me about the terrible conditions and brutality they received during their conscription. It was shocking. One man showed me scars on his legs from being frequently beaten by officers with a wooden chair leg. I also visited a pen friend in Belarus in 1997. When I arrived he been called up for his conscription. I visited him in his army barracks pretending to be a relative as foreigners were not allowed to enter military installations. It was risky for me as well to go in but I wanted to see him. I was quite scared as I could have been arrested. But I didn't get found out. He was thin and gaunt from lack of good food. He said he hated it there and was extremely depressed. He said he had no choice but to be a soldier and the alternative was imprisonment and being beaten in prison and mistreated for refusing enlistment. It really upset me to see the terrible conditions he was living under. He said new recruits were also bullied and beaten.

Article 13 of the Geneva Convention says: "prisoners of war must at all times be protected, particularly against acts of violence or intimidation and against insults and public curiosity." All you people who think this is great would be screaming a different tune if Russia were doing this with Ukrainian soldiers. War is hell, quit treating this like a sport.

As hard as it must be for Ukrainian people, I sincerely hope that they will be keep their cool with the treatment of arrested Russian soldiers. Treat your enemy as you would like to be treated yourself. This will help not only your prisoner but also yourself. Don’t lose your humanity.

We did the exact same thing in Afghanistan. Every soldier in Afghanistan had no clue what we REALLY wanted. We can’t be hypocrites about this.
@davidradtke160
@davidradtke160 2 жыл бұрын
Ehh that really avoids some big differences. In Afghanistan when it started everyone knew why they were going and what it was for. Afterward, during the occupation and especially after Bin Laden’s death no one knew why we were there. Mostly inertia. That’s very different from what it appears is happening with these Russian conscripts. Everyone with this whataboutism seems to have forgotten 911 and Bin Laden because we stayed too damn long, and it got tangled up with the idiocy of Iraq. This is not the same.

The fact that the Ukrainian people who are capturing them are both humanizing the soldiers while also using this intimidation tactic showing that they captured one is astounding to me. I've never seen it before. I've never seen those two things happening at the same time.
