What are the most confusing English vowel sounds for an EL (English Learner) student whose first language is Spanish? Did you know this student probably won't be able to tell certain sounds apart?
These sounds may sound very different to an English native speaker, but for a non-native, they sound very similar, if not the same.
We need to help EL hear the difference first (train their ears) so they can actually replicate the sounds, spell and read correctly in English.

It's very likely that EL students need extra support with their Phonemic Awareness skills. While this skill is key for everyone, for EL (English Learners) the ability to hear the sounds and play with the sounds in words - that's what phonemic awareness is, in short- working on this skill is a top priority. They'll probably need more time and more focus working on phonemic awareness than their English native counterparts.
