First slap demonstrated is more of an open slap because you take your hand of the skin. For a slap you have to keep your hand in contact like he does in the pattern but also note that for the pattern he is using the other hand holding the skin which makes the slap sound higher and "dry". In Spanish we call the slap "seco" (dry) to note that there is almost no ringing to it. Also you have to correct the explanation of the pattern, you're transposing some hits (2:57). You are saying "heel, tip, slap, heel, tip, heel, open..." but you did it correctly "heel, tip, slap, tip, heel, tip, open", after the slap the other hand starts with a tip.

Jerry.. just wanted to say that even though the pattern is noted as "heel toe", it is actually palm toe. The idea is to drive your palm down and almost forward. Then you raise the "toe" like a hinge at the heel. When you take your hand off for the open tones, just tilt your arm down so the wrist maintains contact with the drum at the bearing edge. Great playing!

It is a palm-finger but that sounds weird lol

If you follow this as a beginner you will have quite a lot to undo and re-learn to do correctly, heel tip is wrong. You may get by with this technique but to move on to a more advanced level you will be found out. Sorry

You are correct, Ilya. It is HTSTHTOO, not HTSHTHOO. He plays it correctly, but explains it incorrectly on the breakdown.

Be careful following. You will end up spending many hours undoing bad habits. Many good vids out there but be selective. This guy is a beginner and has no business making an instruction video. Before you follow anyone google their name first.
