Really nice presentation and subject matter. This is such a cool tumbao and it has a very similar feel and inflection as a faster songo pattern played on drum set(same sort of permutated feel).

Glad you enjoyed it! For sure, it’s all relayed : )

@@CongaChops here is a beautiful use of almost the identical pattern played by Eliel Lazo(entrance is just past 1:00 min marker) playing with Cuban jazz project. He is right handed but usually sets his #2 drum on his right side and #3 on his left. Anyway, hope you enjoy; kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpbHmX1sarZ9nLs

what microphone do you use?
@CongaChops4 жыл бұрын
Those are three Earthworks DM20 microphones, which I love! But mics are only one part of the overall sound. Remember that the room, instruments, mic placement, pre-amps, audio settings and last but not least the player 🙂 also play a big a part 🙌🏼

Hi, I’m new to conga, enjoying congachops, took me to the next level, I have a question on this video: at what rpm speed do you recommend playing this pattern as opposed to normal tumbao. Like normal tumbao is recommended mainly upto 200 rpm and faster than that you use this one? Thanks

Hey Rawad, these are the types of questions we get all the time in our Community Forum, so when you have a minute make sure to grab your free trial at CongaChops.com and check out what we’ve got going on! To answer your question, there are tempos where it may seem natural to leave out the notes as we teach in this video, it will depend on the technique, aptitude, and taste of each individual, but I would say that playing this fast tumbao as a base pattern can work well at tempos above 120BPM. Anything under that’s under that, it can be used as a variation, but may feel empty as a constant groove!
