They already do. 76% of their funding comes from the government. But the government gets the money from taxpayers through taxes. So either way, it’s coming from your average Joe.

I don’t think it’s that. I just think everyone is shocked that the governor let the MTA waste half a billion dollars planning all of this and setting it up, only to pull the whole thing at the last minute.

I completely agree that they need to focus on enforcement, but fares only account for 24% of MTA revenue. So even if the 16% of riders who evade tolls pay them, it’s not going to come close to plugging the hole in the budget.
