Nice video! I grew up in Congleton and moved to the US in 2003. Every time I come home, it’s depressing to see how much it’s gone downhill. 3:07 I worked there when it was Wollies. I think the Superdrug and WH Smith and Wetherspoons (which used to be a bank - I think NatWest) are the only places still remaining that were there when I emigrated. Looks like even Barclays have shut. Used to have a really good town centre. The Bear Grills place has been there since at least the 70s and has always been a cafe. Looks a bit fancier now! I’ll have to see if there’s one of Macc too. I even remember the Majestic cinema there! Cheers for the video! Edit: Pikelets are a Stoke thing like oatcakes. I don’t think they’re sold north of Congleton or south of Stone. Oh and they do sell them both at Tesco in Congleton. The bakers in Stoke drop off a load in the morning and they usually disappear by mid-morning. Goldenhill Oatcakes near Kidsgrove is a really good place for breakfast - was still open last time I was home.

Good video, Alot of those boarded shops are actually under refurbishment particularly the first one which used to be B&M. Shame you came down on a Monday, always quiet then, this Saturday is makers market weekend and it will be very busy with a great atmosphere. The Cenotaph area was rebuilt, maybe worth looking at google maps streetview to see what it was like before, quite a difference to now! Congleton Park is just across the way too which is stunning with a nice Pavilion. The 750 poster was the town celebrating 750 years as a town last year with big festivals throughout the year.

The oatcake shop has always been closed on Sundays and Mondays, open from 6AM till 2PM the rest of the week, one of the best shops in town!!!

These videos are a load of…I was there today and the high street was bustling. Impressed by the number of independent shops and cafes that were also busy. You and others doing these videos always go places on a rainy Monday at 10am, as if you want to embellish the notion of a dying Britain. Well there’s empty and boarded up shops in every city around the world, and always have been. I found Congleton to be a nice sized town with a healthy high street, that was my first impression. Even some of the side streets which had small businesses on them seemed to be well kept and some places even improving or upgrading their premises. Maybe come back on a Friday at 2pm and you’ll see some more activity, or better yet get off your arse and open a high street shop and reverse the trend! 😂
