California Democratic congresswoman Katie Porter spelled out to JP Morgan's CEO, Jamie Dimon, the real-world implications of the low wages his bank pays its junior employees at a senate hearing on Wednesday. After running Dimon through the numbers, Porter found that a single mother on the bank's starting salary for a teller would be $567 in the red at the end of each month. Asked how a woman in that situation could get by, Dimon said, 'I don't know'

@K B She's still in the red even if she lives alone though. $1700 rent/utilities, $400 car expenses, $400 food budget and a $40 phone leave her $115 in debt. If you include health insurance that's $199 a month with a government subsidy which leaves her $314 in debt. According to award-winning financial planner Pete Dunn you're supposed to pay 5% of your monthly budget towards clothing or around $121 which now leaves her $435 in debt. It isn't possible for her to pay for college if this is how she has to live regardless of whether she has children or not.

Alex Rivas I think I’ve said this before, we can not create our own scenarios in order to justify the wrong here. The reality in America is most kids aren’t planned, there’s some laws now preventing some people from having abortions and some are underage and unable to get one without parental consent. Not many people opt for adoption because America has this weird backwards ideology that if you’re not for a child you shouldn’t have one but if you do you’re completely responsible for the child and shouldn’t put the burden on someone else. She had her kid and personally I think she’s doing the best she can for the situation and the job she has and the place she has to live. Yes she could move maybe that will fix the rent but the reality is in a lot of places the rent goes up at least 50-100 every year of living there. Sometimes it’s not the people it’s the corporations. That being said I appreciate your input and I hope we both learned something from each other. Have a great rest of your day

Exactly. These commenters that see these questions as an attack clearly aren't paying attention. The gouges and inflation is happening nationally. It's not that people can't be paid more. It's that companies figured it out during the housing crash when people were desperate: if most companies make it the policy to underpay and overwork average employees, the top execs and shareholders get to keep increasing their net worth. All of the oversight is gone. Labor unions except for a few industries are a thing of the past, and there is no stopping the money train from the political side as long as we don't support Justice Democrats.

NOW, Many States & Cities are increasing their Minimum Wage ABOVE the Fed Min Wage. E.g., CA's Minimum wage is $25 or so an hour PLUS Health Benefits. LSUtiger607 Not sure why you find the need to judge, blame, and worsen the employees situation. The question from to Congresswoman to CEO of the largest banking firm is how to help balance/help a full time employee raise a child. She is asking his professional opinion on how to help one of his own employees. Common situation 30% of all children are raised by a single parent. The answer is you CAN NOT. His company pays nothing except the 31 million to the ceo. Area cost is too high. Living expense is too high. Basically that “FULL TIME JOB” is there to cost you money and time in hopes to advance to his CEO position and get 31 million.

Minh N . It is not the responsibility of business owners to satisfy each employee’s finances. They offer a job at a specific pay. If single moms accept these offers then it must have been the best option for them. What about the 21 year old bank employee with few bills and living with her parents? Pay seems adequate for her. You haven’t answered my question: ‘are business owners required to pay commensurate to an employees bills?’ Which employees? The 21 year old? 60% of businesses fail in the first 10 years. Would you, an outsider to these transactions, a 3rd party observer, like to force higher labor costs on business owners and climb that number to 70, 80%?
@minhn1791
@minhn1791 5 жыл бұрын
LSUtiger607 You expect a 21 year old to have a full time job and still live with her parents!? What a world. There you are judging again. I can’t answer your 3rd party question because I do own a business and I pay my employees well and make sure financial issues are not affecting their work. Employers should and many do compensate an employee’s bill. Why else do you work for a company? Have you ever heard of relocation reimbursement which includes breaking of leases, tuition assistance, healthcare, short term long term disability insurance, dependent care reimbursement, legal assistance, all there to help my employees save money for their life’s situations. Everyone full time gets the benefits even the receptionist. We only have a part time janitor at the moment but he still gets 50% of the benefits. I dropped the janitorial service we had because their janitors didn’t get anything. I don’t care if 99.9% of all businesses fail without the first 10 years. Businesses will always pop up. Pay average wages, you get average workers. And I have asked and received a higher pay due to my situation before and I give higher pay depending on each situation.
@LSUtiger607
@LSUtiger607 5 жыл бұрын
Minh N. Well congratulations. Your business is doing well enough to pay those benefits. Moreover, I’m going to leave you alone to do whatever you want with your own company. You on the other hand, are interested in telling other business owners what to do with their own money. Are you suggesting economics is so simple to imply “pay employees anything and everything they want and your business will be successful!?” I’m going to keep asking. Which employees under which financial situations are to be the benchmark for employee compensations? If my bills total $10k a month are you suggesting I storm into the nearest McDonald’s and demand six figures to pay for all that? Are you so naive to think any business can survive on any labor cost?
@minhn1791
@minhn1791 5 жыл бұрын
LSUtiger607 Why do you feel like you have to go to the extreme to try to sound right? Why don’t we all just get rid of the government rules and regulations and let companies rule the world like they did before. That way I can hire 7 year olds and pay them pennies and make them work 80 hours a week with no breaks. It is not the banks own money. There is federal government backing up these banks with tax payers dollars otherwise no one would deposit any money into their banks. These banks would not be at all successful without the government help yet they do not want to follow federal wage regulations. Matter fact the government even bailout JP Morgan with $12 billion with Jamie Dimon as CEO. We are not talking about giving people everything they want. We are talking about $600 a month to get this FULL TIME employee out of the red just for food shelter transport and childcare. Basic needs for her to go to work and you know stay alive. She needs a lot more than just that. While the CEO pays himself $31 million. The reason why I ignore those questions because they’re dumb and have no value. Where do you come up with all these dumb situations? A real person needs 3k minimum a month to raise her daughter. No debt, no luxury expenses. All of a sudden you’re talking about wanting 10k from McDonalds. Apparently I have to spell it out for you. Here are some situations where you should pay an employee more: high cost of living, that includes rent, food, utilities, cell phone, transportation, childcare, healthcare insurance. These are normal basic things people need. Average rent there is $1600 monthly and she gets $2425. That right there should be enough to tell you the job does not pay enough for a person to even rent a place in the same city. It’s a “job” that cost the employee money and time for a “chance” to become CEO and pay yourself $31 million

That’s more than most people will ever make in their entire lives. If you cut that down, that woman makes in a month what takes him half an hour to get. Ofcourse he should be payed more, he’s a CEO, the head of a company. He’s far more important than a random single mom in an apartment somewhere. But how the hell can it be justified that that single mother is making enough money to equal around 2.5 years of work, in comparison to what that CEO makes in a month. The law has already made the determination employers are responsible for the well-being of their employees outside of work via the existence of minimum wage laws in the first place and employers being required to provide health insurance (which is about as personal as it gets). Does the poor become your problem? Keep in mind I’m from Canada and I pay through the roof in taxes and don’t mind it one bit. It Doesn’t mean that I need to solve the worlds problems If i continue to work hard and make more money. I’m just saying there is a happy balance. @@kimlee9917 honestly if I made $500K per year I wouldn't be interested in buying a mansion. I used to have a very good engineering job and I didn't even buy an Infinity or Lexus car. I just look at money differently from others. But also I wasn't really interested in either one, although I wouldn't have mind buying a BMW. Also, no one is asking you to solve the world's problems; as the saying goes "think globally, act locally." But paying people a just wage is McDonald's problem because that's how much people need to make in order to pay the bare minimum to live off of and live as human beings. It just requires companies to change their perspective on what money really is. When all is said and done, the greatest companies will not be judged first and foremost by how much wealth they created or how much profits they made, but by how much they treated their workers. I know it sounds very contrarian in our capitalist system since we're so used to it, and we're unfamiliar to other economic systems and thoughts, but from an objective standpoint wealth creation and profits is secondary to how workers are treated.
