Sorry, but it's illogical to say something is a conifer that doesn't bear cones. Didn't you mean that are not evergreen?

It is in it's own category for now, but being so lonely by itself, the coneheads have grouped it with the conifers. Conifers usually have needles or scales, and gingko leaves resemble scales. And conifers are not all evergreen. I have a larch that loses its leaves early winter, so it looks totally dead. Meanwhile, others loses the majority of leaves springtime or others, like my pine, start shedding the old needles closer to fall. Just like there are oaks and deciduous trees that hold on to some of their (essentially dead) leaves overwinter or until new leaves pushes them out (including apples trees).
