Conisbrough Castle is located here about 6 miles from Doncaster, in Conisbrough, South Yorkshire
It is a mediaeval castle. It was one of a chain owned by the Warenne family from Normandy who were rewarded for their services by William the Conqueror.
The stone Keep we see now was probably constructed around 1170 or 1180 and the remaining stone buildings shortly afterwards. The round keep was unusual as in the 12th century most Keeps were square or rectangular. This is a grade 1 listed building and a scheduled ancient monument
To provide some context using a timeline of monarchs, the original wooden castle would have been constructed around the time of the Norman conquest, William 1st, the stone Keep late 12th century, this would have been in the time of Henry II or Richard I, otherwise known as Richard the Lionheart.
The castle played a part in the War of the Roses, being a Yorkist stronghold but then it fell into neglect and by the time of Henry VIII rule it was considered ruinous
The castle became popular in the 19th century as a result of the book Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott, this is where the castle with its distinctive round tower was used as a setting. Ivanhoe has been made into multiple film and TV series.

Thank you that was very interesting as always. It’s done very well if it was a ruin by Henry the eighth.
