The sound of those old Conns were fantastic. I have a 6M from 1939, and though I have played Mark VI's, SBA's, that Conn is still the best sounding horn I've ever played, which is why I've kept it.

That NW II sounds fantastic (with you playing it). I have always liked the 10M, but that NW II sounds amazingly smooth. The 10M may well have more edge and better ergonomics, and is of course a fantastic vintage horn too.

Wow! Very good playing! Thanks for posting this nice comparison. The NW II has a more round tone and is a little softer on the edges. The 10M is a tad more snappier and crispy. Both have that distinctive full and fat Conn tone for sure. It is hard to choose which one I would prefer. Today I would lean more towards the 10M. Tomorrow I might just as well choose differently.. If I would play a lush ballad i would take the NW for that velvety tone I happen to have a '36 10M and a '24 NW and both see lots of use with different setups. Usually the NW is my backup horn however I switch quite often. Another thing is that the NW has a different feel of the keys and makes me play differently. Even faster and smoother than on the 10M. The key pearls on the NW are more convex so my fingers are more on top of it. While the keys on the 10M are concave and feel more comfortable. However it is not hard to get adjusted to both. I think both are great horns with a fantastic tone.

Have you played the NWII Bari? I'm thinking of getting one, but I'm wondering how easy it is to adjust to the keys. The low pinky placement is a little awkward.

@bluscorpion Жыл бұрын
Wow, that was a stark difference. The NWII had a nice warmth, low buzz, sort of low tone that creates a nice soothing effect. The 10M looks and sound bigger- immediately noticed a difference and wondered if you anything else changed besides the horn (did he get closer or use a different mouth piece. Thanks for sharing, this was great! I'm looking at a NW II bari that has the same buzz effect as the tenor. I was curious if that was due to the design or the horn itself. So this was very helpful. I def prefer the warm sorta muffled buzz of the NWII for general listening, but I could see how the 10M would be better for big band upbeat numbers.
@bluscorpion Жыл бұрын
So I'm listening to this again, and initially the 10m sounds brighter, but then they sound exactly the same. Same warmth and buzz- the 10m is a bit more resonant. But I think I figured out the big difference isn't the horn, but your comfort. I noticed you really went in while playing the 10M, so I'm guessing you enjoy that horn better.

I agree with other writers, 10M for modern playing. I just picked up one and she will do anything I ask her to do. I haven't tried Yanagisawa tenors, but my choice is the Buescher Aristocrat, or the 10M. I have an underslung neck. Altissimo is incredible. I think the 10M, from your demo has the edge people need for modern jazz...(action).

Love your playing! , both horns are great, I ‘ve owned 4 New Wonder II’s, and 4 transitionals based on the body of NWII’s, (splitkey bell) they all sound a bit different!, (different pads?/condition etc..) is it because they’re handmade ?

First of all, I really enjoy your playing and sound on all your videos. You sound great and I watch (listen) to your videos on a regular. At first listen I thought I liked the NWII more but after going back and forth I can't decide which one sounds better. Which one do you prefer and why? I own a 1916 Conn (I think its a new invention, 85,xxx serial number, no pearls on the keys, silver plated, has front F key) and a 10M with rolled tone holes but my 10M needs an overhaul and doesn't blow at all unfortunately. My favorite sounding tenor is my 1936 Buescher Series I Aristocrat. It sounds better than my SBA's, VI's, and Super 20 with full pearls. I wish my 10M was in playing condition so I could compare it to the rest of my horns as well but I can't justify spending money on an overhaul when I already have killer horns.
@tbonijazz6 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul - I'm glad you like it. Overall I prefer the 10M. It's an incredibly responsive horn to play, with such a complex, deep sound. Also the action is incredible. I've tried lots of other horns - incl MkVI and SBA - but I wouldn't part with my 10M for anything so far! The NWII is a brilliant backup horn, though.
@newking706 жыл бұрын
have you thought about sending it to steve crow to modernize the key work?
@TWO204 жыл бұрын
Both sound phenomenal, but what about the fingering layout? These were both made before the mark 6 layout was popular, and the older conns tend to have...imperfect ergonomics.
@tbonijazz4 жыл бұрын
To be honest I've never found it a problem. The 10M in particular is amazingly fast and comfortable to play-I love the action and now find modern/balanced action layout less comfy. Of course it can take a while to boom familiar if you've played modern horns for ages, but I wouldn't say the egos are imperfect - just different. Same with Buescher actually - once you get used to is, the feel under the fingers is fabulous. I know some people have their Conns worked on to feel similar to Selmer etc but I can't imagine wanting to do that.

@tbonijazz5 жыл бұрын
Hi - I only borrowed that horn v briefly, but I remember thinking it seemed like a re-lacq. But who knows... It played well! My 10m is original but mostly worn off, and the transitional I play a lot has no lacquer at all, so i have nothing to compare to really. Sorry to be of little help!

Hi Samuel - no, it has rolled tone holes. Cheers

Im following the steps to a 334xxx 1949 conn 10 m with straight tone holes. Do you think that the sound of this straight tone holes conn 10m (1948-56 i think) are different from the pre 1948? Ara more brillant?. Now i own a 1926 chu berry tenor but the neck is a saxgourmet neck, i never try others conns so i dont know if this neck change the original conn sound, or just get a better intonation and projection. Greetins from spain.
@tbonijazz6 жыл бұрын
I haven't played a straight tone hole model for longer than 10 minutes so I couldn't really compare for you... The general wisdom seems to be that the rounded holes are better models BUT as usual there are great straight tone hole horns too. As to what is more brilliant, I think it varies horn to horn not just model to model. As always, the rule is try it out and see what you think! I would, however, say always go with the original neck if you can... but that's just my opinion.
