this helped a bunch, only issung im having is when i do this, the secondary screen im using doesnt have my desktop settings so to speak, its like a brand new desktop , meaning like none of the apps on my main macbook desktop trnsferre over, my wallpaper is the normal Os background. how do i get it so when i split the displays, my main desktop transfers over with all my apps on my desktop and wallpaper ?

Yes, USB C to HDMI adapter. Sometimes they will have other ports so it will be called "multiport" ... just make sure it includes HDMI. There are links in the description of this video.

I would use a converter. Haven't seen laptop docking stations for years but you can get vertical laptop stands that hold or hide your Macbook. I use one like this: amzn.to/3oFOT0N

I have a 2017 Macbook air with a Dell monitor. I purchased a USB C to USB A adapter and an HDMI to USB C cord. The HDMI part is going into the monitor and the USB C side into the adapter but it is not connecting. What am I doing wrong? Thank you!

Certain manufacturers may not be compatible with the MBP or the dongle. Not sure about Dell in particular.

Hi. When I hook up McPro to LG Monitor thrugh USB -c-port I am able to close MacBook and work only on extended monitor. Why I can't do same with HDMI connection. It's only allows me to use both displays as you instructed in your video here

You mean, you are trying to use the screen of the iMac as an external monitor for the PC, or vice versa? I don't think that's possible.

Okay, so I found this video while looking for a solution to my issue. I feel like it was pretty simple to do without help, but both screens keep turning off and on when I hook up the external monitor.

When you first switch monitors, shut the lid, unplug/plug in cables, it will turn off and on. If it keeps on doing that, try shutting down the system completely and restarting with the cables plugged in.

I've been able to connect to monitors and a TV. With the TV make sure you are using the right HDMI input on the back AND the input setting matches.

Are you sure it's the right type of HDMI cable? There are a few special cables for HDMI mini and HDMI micro, which are different than standard HDMI. www.tripplite.com/products/hdmi-cable-types

I am unable to hook up 2 monitors and have both be extended displays. I have both monitors hooked up and both monitors are showing the same thing and I don't have the option to add another extended display. So I am able to connect my macbook pro 2019 to the monitor, but the monitor does not show what is on my desktop and only shows one desktop (the one with nothing on it) even though my computer clearly shows a whole lot of windows and desktop files, etc. I am able to go to the system preferences on the monitor, and adjust things, but I cannot actually pull up any files from my computer to my monitor. For me it won’t work unless I mirror. When I Uncheck the mirror screen, it won’t allow me to drag what I need from my Mac to the external screen. On the initial set up it doesn’t duplicate the Home Screen from my mac, to the external screen. Do you know what I could be doing wrong?

You can't turn off the Macbook but you can shut the lid while the monitors stay on. You might have to press a key or click your mouse to wake the external display.

That's often related to the settings ... set the monitor to 1080p if available (not 1080i). If you don't see 1080p restart the computer.

Does the monitor have a separate input setting? If there are two HDMI inputs on the back of the monitor, make sure the correct one is selected.

Are you sure the plugs are seated on each end? Can you test that the cable works (for instance, on another monitor or TV)?

Do you mean the new USB-C, or the old style USB A? The former works the same as shown in the video but just plug directly into the Mac USB C port. USB A connected monitors do not exist as far as I know.

Try a different cable, and make sure the correct input setting is used on the monitor (for instance, the correct monitor HDMI port). I also found that the jacks for Macs need to be firmly seated with the cable head.
