Connect PoE extender with NVR for powering long distance IP camera

PoE NVR has integrated both Power and network together which simplify the IP camera system setup. The PoE only can reach 100 meters far. Once there is more than 100 meters far away from NVR, the PoE extender can be added to the network, so it will repeat both power and network for another 100 meters.

Hi, I am currently setting up my own CCTV system. 12Volt system Ip cameras. I have used 23AWG nexans 100% copper cat6 cable. I will send the power via POE splitter cable. what would be the maximum power supply? I have no concerns about data transmission, but the 12V decreases stability over long distances. Do you have any experience in this regard?

It is better you pick the standard PoE system (IEEE802.3af/at). The standard PoE switch or injector use power between DC48V-DC56V to adapt to the power loss. You will need a PoE splitter (IEEE802.3 compatible). The PoE splitter will step down the voltage to DC12V. Moreover, the power handshaking in standard PoE. The switch or injector will not send the power until it verify the edge device is IEEE802.3 compatible.

the POE extender dose not conected to any power source. the question is how the poe extender compensate the power loss in the caple?

The power loss can’t be compensated. The consequences is the voltage drop at the destination. The PoE switch use up to 55V power output, as long as the remain voltage is over 36.5V, the PoE system will work according to IEEE802.3 protocol. You should use PoE+ injector or switch if your ip device needs 14.4W (PoE). With 4 pairs being used, The standard PoE can reach 800 meters (2500ft) for IEEE802.3af.

Unfortunately, the maximum range for this long-range PoE+ switch is 800 meters. At this distance, the network speed will be reduced to 10Mbps. Even if you add another PoE extender to the link, the signal strength is too weak to be duplicated. Moreover, power can never be regenerated meaning there'll be power loss when it hits a certain threshold.

No, it is the outdoor standard cat5e. If you worry about the power loss inline, you should pick the Ethernet cable in pure copper. Just stay away CCA cable which will cause the serious power loss in long distance PoE network.

You can either pull 8 independent cat5e cables (700ft) or set up switch at the edge to aggregate 8 cameras before sending them back to NVR. The information is not enough to come up with a solution. If you plan to use single cable to carry all 8 cameras, the power source needs to be availalbe at the edge.

I think the PoE doesn't support analog or wireless camera. The power over Ethernet (PoE) is based on TCP/IP which means your cameras should be network cameras.

You may need to figure out why 120M can't power up your PTZ camera. If it is the standard cat6 cable, the data should not be the problem. You may test the camera with power supply unit at the edge, if the whole system works well, the cause come from the power budget. The remain power is not enough for your PTZ camera. Yes, you will need each PoE extender for each of the camera. You also can use the PoE extender to extend the network distance between your PoE switch the NVR. The last PoE extender only will provide the data to your NVR.

Hi, i 've installed new swann 4k ultra nvr system and used 5e cat cables in the building each not longer that 30-40m and after conneting did not worked at all. There was power comking to the cameras but no vision. I replaced from 5e to 6cat faster cables and still the same problem. Cameras works only on original 15m cables. Any idea what to do next? Thanks

You may use pre-made short patch cord to test the camera with the NVRs. If it is not working, I assume the cable is not the issue. If it is working, you may need to examine the crimp cable. The power should not be the issue. The PoE transport send the power and data within 100 meters, even you are not using the pure copper cable, it should be fine within 50 meters. There is no vision, i guess the issue come up from the data transmission.

Yes, you can take the PoE extender to repeat the link between the switch and your NVR. It is the standard TCP/IP protocols between your switch and NVR. The PoE extender repeat the network for TCP/IP only.

Icant get a picture out of my poe camera after 30 meters.. changed the cat5a cable to cat6a, still no signal , what am i doing wrong?? my nvr is boavision with a 48 v adapter. every camera works fine below 30 m distance.

I really don't think the cable quality could cause the issue. Even the low quality cable can supply 30 meters PoE either IEEE802.3 PoE or no standard PoE, except you are dealing with high power camera such as infrared PTZ camera. The low quality cable could cause serious voltage drop. You mention you have try even cat6, I think the cable quality is not the issue. I will suggest you double check the connection of the cable over 30 meters.

@@golbongtoday thanks for your reply, connections are fine i got a Poe switch and hooked it up to the NVR now i can get max 68 meters on cat6a CU cable, my camera has infrared but no tilt or zoom. basic poe camera, but still looking at your video reaching 300-400 meters blows my mind... I am starting to think problem might be from the NVR as it is low quality 100$sh NVR.

One of the most simple and reliable solution is you should deploy 4 core fiber optical cable. Each node has independent fiber link. Another solution is you can choose ring network switch, you should two core fiber optical cable to create the link. You should can set up the daisy chain to put all 10 cameras in single fiber, however, the whole cameras system will go dark if first fiber device is defective.

The possible solution i can come up with is the PoE Switch with ring function. Firstly, you will need to AC power to node. You can't send the PoE power from the NVR and pass through all node. Otherwise, the voltage drop will be the nightmare. The ring usually employ the fiber optical cable to link together and be able to recover automatically even one or two of the node is down. The speed should not the problem to put all the 21 cable in fiber optical even it is 8 megapixel.
