The Connect the Grid Act introduced by Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Greg Casar is not the solution Texas needs to make our energy grid more reliable. Every state around Texas is also facing looming capacity shortages thanks to the anti-energy policies coming from Washington, D.C., and if it was economical to build more transmission to other states, it would have already been done. This is simply a policy to force more wind and solar into the grid and to subject Texas to more burdensome federal and interstate regulations and inefficiencies. Texas can provide affordable and reliable electricity to its citizens by fixing its electricity market and undoing the market distortions and subsidies that overvalue wind and solar and undervalue dispatchable generation.
The Texas Public Policy Foundation’s mission is to promote and defend liberty, personal responsibility, and free enterprise in Texas and the nation by educating and affecting policymakers and the Texas public policy debate with academically sound research and outreach.
Funded by thousands of individuals, foundations, and corporations, the Foundation does not accept government funds or contributions to influence the outcomes of its research.
The public is demanding a different direction for their government, and the Texas Public Policy Foundation is providing the ideas that enable policymakers to chart that new course.

Connected grid wouldb't be cheaper, but it should improve reliability during a snow storm. Its a trade-off. I think independent power grids are awesome but the if you aren't going to use the burdensome regulations from DC, then you'll need your own burdensome regulations to ensure reliability. Its more work, but its local work, just don't be dellusional and think someone is going to come tell you when your grid is in danger. Its yours... not our problem now. Texas clearly wasn't prepared the last time, I think its a valid question for the citizens to say "What did we do to make sure this doesn't happen again?" Maybe this type of event is so infrequent there is nothing to do but make an emergency plan. If so, then let folks know, hopefully that will be enough to keep you independent. This should definitelty be a choice made by Texans though, the Fed should not be cramming it down your throats. Edit: 300 miles is the distance listed by Google as the max. distance power can be transmitted, but similar to gas pipelines there can be facilities that use some ofbthe power to increase the distance it can be transmitted so the line capacities are really the issues, not generation.

I like the idea of connecting grids. We should look to new mexico and old mexico for desert climate areas where we can put solar, and there's plenty of wind. The best place to put solar is hot and dry, and west texas is great, but new mexico and arizona are better. Connecting grids is great, but the very last thing we need is the same people who write rules for california writing rules for us. Why don't we connect with Mexico so that when another winter blast comes to town, we have solar and wind in places that didn't get a solar blast?
