If that happens I would guess (and I have no idea about sentencing etc) that any form of win might involve an earlier possible release date/minimum amount of time he can serve. Or maybe some conditions on which he may be released earlier. Or some of the lesser charges (e.g. handling stolen goods) dropped. Personally I think the (current) prison sentence is fair enough. If I was given almost half a century in Prison...I'd probably commit suicide. But he is looking at significant jail time...and has thrown his life away.

People who appeal sentences run the risk of having them extended. It has happened before. Having said that, his sentence is so long, an extension would hardly matter, and an appeal may result in a reduction. In his shoes, I'd appeal. I should make it clear, I have no sympathy for him, whatsoever.

Certainly they won’t appeal as they’d have to argue that the judge had to give a whole life sentence, which he didn’t. Connor may instruct his lawyers to explore an appeal but likewise to win he would have to show that 48 years was outside of the judge’s authority, which since he was justifiably considering a whole life order would also have no chance of succeeding.

​@ejuicevaper The are a number of problems with the death penalty that contributed to it being abolished in countries around the world. - You risk executing innocent people, and it is often used by authoritarian governments to permanently get rid of people they don't like. - People still commit crimes punishable by execution, so it's deterrence is not absolute. - As a society we have moved towards trying to rehabilitate people rather than punish them. - It clashes with the concept of the right to life. That's not to say you don't have a point. Having to care and provide for people who have proven themselves to be a menace to society will for many, be a massive waste. I agree that prison won't fix the problem. Executing them would save on costs and be a much faster way to ensure they never harm anyone again. From my understanding, to at least some of them, being attracted to children feels natural, just like how most people are attracted to others of the opposite gender. You only get one body in life, so they have nothing to compare it to. Of course they should be expected to have the critical thinking to realise that their attraction to children is wrong, despite their feelings towards them. They should be given a chance to receive help of some kind, before they act on their urges. There seems to be a distinct lack of that currently.

When he told him that his sentences would run concurrently and that the starting point for a fixed term for murder is 30 years, he must have been thinking "Out at 51, not so bad." As a 50 year old man, I can comprehend how long 48 years is. My earliest memories are of being 3 years old & attending a street party for Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee in 1976. After 10 years or so he will become institutionalised & the rest of his sentence will become normal life to him. Personally when there is no doubt of guilt, I like the idea of capital punishment & not knowing the day of your death. Let’s bring a touch of terror to his life! R.I.P Elle ❤️‍🩹

Hi Michael, Concurrent sentences are issued in part, to make sure that if they appeal and win against one of their charges, then they will still have to serve time in prison. If you have 3 concurrent charges but beat 2 of them, then you still have to serve the third charge. Hope this helps.

Great sentencing by this judge. About time we stopped these ludicrously low, derisory sentences for serious crimes. We need a lot more like this. And FFS let’s start fixing a ‘life’ sentence at just that - and not the mandatory x15 years. Nothing will bring Elle back but I hope her family and friends can derive some peace from this judgement.

About time they took organised child rape more seriously and imposed far higher sentences with fixed minimum terms of 10years at the very least.

It's not illegal to own a gun in the UK, as long as you have a license. Don't know why Americans always think it is. We just generally don't want to own a gun enough to go through the hassle of getting a license.

FYI the judges don't set the sentencing guidelines, have a word with the Government of the last 13 years. Who have pretty much removed any penalty for anti-social behavior and assault and other violet crimes. The judges will sentence based on upon the law and guildline set out at that time. Then we will get more like this sentencing, harsher sentences all round

Give us a referendum. Let the people have their say. And I've got a close member of my family serving a sentence for murder. They'll be out soon. Their poor, much loved, victim and their family have got a permanent life sentences.

48 years is still nothing that beautiful girl should have had them years. I think this is finally a good sentence. But they are few and far between. We need to be seeing this happen more for serious crimes. Rip elle
