The National Ploughing Championships in Killarney, Co. Kerry featuring the usual mix of agricultural exhibitions and competitions.
The first Ploughing Championships covered by RTÉ were the ones held in Killarney in 1961. They were filmed on 8 and 9 November 1961 for the first ever episode of the farming programme ‘On the Land’, which was broadcast on 1 January 1962, the day after Telefís Éireann went on air.
Reporter Noel O’Reilly introduces the championships and talks to organiser Mrs Grosvenor, who fires a pistol to start the competition.
