I’d heard Danny Boy many many times and assumed it was a love song. It is a love song-from a father to a son who’s gone to war, which is why it’s a standard in the tenor repertoire. Sinead’s lovely fragile version was unknown to me before now. That slip of a girl is gone just as Danny is gone. ☘️

Truly a legacy of the sounds of an Irish woman, so steeped in a bloody history of adopted painful history, hauntingly beautiful. I had a friend when I was young a Liverpudlian "scouse" who when he was drunk he would sing like Rod Stewart, Danny Boy and Molly Malone, he used to be a seaman and wore a Pork Pie hat had a boxers nose spread across his face, frequently drank too much and would win fights using the Liverpool kiss, a dangerous head butt, but when he sang he was like a angel, his name was Billy Bell.
