Deal or no deal? The complexity of trying to agree the price of a horse in Castleisland, County Kerry.
With the assistance of a mediator, Maurice Reidy of Castleisland is hoping to sell a horse to Mr Raymond.
Mr Raymond offers £200 for the mare but Maurice, also known as Mossie, is looking for £300.
The previous day Mossie says he could have sold the horse to a Frenchman for £200. The mediator points out the Frenchman may not have had the money, whereas Mr Raymond does and he is willing to take the horse away the next day.
The mediator tries to get the two men to settle on the price of £250, but Mossie makes a fuss about this price prompting Mr Raymond to calm matters.
I don’t want to make little of your horse Maurice.
Eventually Maurice agrees to come down to £250.
I’ll just have half ways and I’ll have no more.
But Mr Raymond will only offer £225. The mediator attempts to get the men to settle on £230 but Mr Raymond is not buying at this price.
Maurice wants more money and good luck to him if he can get it.
Mr Raymond cannot be persuaded to buy the horse but tells Mossie,
When you have another one I’ll call around.
This episode of ‘Hall’s Pictorial Weekly’ was broadcast on 27 January 1973.

A superb demonstration of authentic Hiberno-English. These are the steps to follow: fill your lungs with air, assemble the greatest number of syllables you can summon in your mind and, when it's your turn to speak, release them all at maximum speed . The swiftest horse in Kerry runs away in the presence of such pace ...
@cigh7445
@cigh7445 3 жыл бұрын
They aren't speaking that fast most of the time, some of the time they are actually speaking slowly and clearly. It's just the prosody and phonetics of their speech is different to the more standard English of modern Irish speech. Some people still have regional accents, sure, but the individual phonemes of the young are now the English ones (soft non-dental t's, English r's instead of taps, vowel quality, etc)

@cigh7445
@cigh7445 3 жыл бұрын
@J T I didn't say they had 'English accents', I'm talking about the individual sounds of the 'English language'. Be you in Australia, US, UK, Ireland, there are more similarities than differences in the sound structure of the respective dialects, at least on a phonemic level. In Ireland, in particular among older men, in certain areas, there was Gaelic substrate influence left on some of their phonemes. Indeed, in the past, most Hiberno-English dialects used pure vowels similar to the traditional Irish language ones (some still do), but this is no longer the case. There is now a more standardised Irish dialect nationwide which took it's main influence from 'new middle class Dublin', a dialect which doesn't have any Irish language influence phonetically, and transatlantic/American, which is the even newer influence on the English of the youth of Ireland (language change happens fast, and the current spheres of influence are Dublin and America (in the past England was the sphere of influence on the English here, but it has been surpassed by Dublin and the US. Older rural farmers in the west of Ireland and older native Irish speakers have never been a sphere of influence for language change to direct itself toward in this country))

I'm from Brum - 20 years ago, there was a Kerryman who'd roam the town centre, (particularly around the area where he had a namesake as a pub). He was, to all intents and purposes, homeless, dressed in tatters, no matter what the weather was like. He'd approach certain folk and ask for 20p, in a very friendly and non-threatening, though somewhat inebriated, manner. If you gave him any more, he'd hand back 'the change' for 'luck'. God love him!

A few years ago a friend of mine bought a horse at the Lamas Fair in Ballycastle. Anyway he thought he got a great deal so took the horse home and put it in a wee field with a single sheep the kids adopted as a lamb. The next day the weans ran into the house screaming that the horse was running around the field with the sheep in its mouth. The thing was totally mad but the boys that sold them the horse had it on all kinds of drugs to keep it calm.

What’s the idea of the middle man
@MarkOLeary1
@MarkOLeary1 3 жыл бұрын
There as a pseudo "honest party" but often would be on the side of the buyer or seller. Helps to stop an impasse in the deal as pride can often stop one party from giving way to the other but if the middle man suggests a compromise its easier for them to agree while saving face.
