4:05 Honestly it was sort od the opposite for me. I struggled with writing my essay because I was given an amazing education, I just haven't experienced any trauma or blatent disadvantages in my life (which typically make for a very compelling essay). The most traumatic experienced I faced was moving from Connecticut to Massachussetts between 8th and 9th grade, but that type struggle happens to millions each year, which makes it a topic to avoid. I just feel like I didn't get the chance to have the specific moment of massive personal growth, it just kind of happened gradually in an uninspiring way.
@princezzpuffypants62872 жыл бұрын
Trauma and big life altering events are an "easy" choice for a topic, but one does not need to experience something outside of the norm in order to experience dramatic personal growth. Something as prosaic as daytime TV can trigger an epiphany that changes the way you look at the world. If you can demonstrate an ability to shift your perspective regardless of worldy experience, you're going to look good to admissions officers. Maybe you've read something profound or witnessed a friend, neighbor, classmate or someone you've volunteered with go through something that changed your perspective.... if not, consider volunteering at a shelter, hospice or nursing home...

You shouldn’t form your identity around your political opinions or around controversial things. Colleges want to see who you are, not your opinions on politics or pseudo political topics. I see this a lot from kids coming out of high school; they always form their entire identity around wether they are for or against social justice - this isn’t an identity. Are you an artist? What are your hobbies (genuine hobbies, not protesting or counter protesting)? where did you grow up and what did you learn growing up and from whom? What makes you different? What are your academic interests and goals? These are actual pieces of your identity that are much more meaningful than what you think about our current president or your position on trans issues. Don’t fall into the trap that too many kids fall into these days.

My topic is hugely depressive. It’s about my experiences with cutting, suicidal friends (alive and passed), and an emotionally and physically abusive relationship that lasted over a year and a half. More than that though I want it to be about how I persevered through those challenges and how they’ve shaped me for the better. Would this be too depressing or should I continue on with it? Any feedback would be hugely appreciated.

Additionally I want to cover how working through those experiences taught me to be empathetic but also how to be able to care about myself. A really life changing moment happened for me when my friend took his own life and I found myself that night trying to cut into myself with a broken pencil. That was the last time I ever did anything like that. I left my abusive relationship soon after. I learned that life is too precious to hurt yourself.

I’ll just be honest, this is sort of overdone. I have absolutely no credentials but I recognize this is something you’ve grown from, and that’s great. But when you write it you’re going to have to be very careful about not sounding like you feel bad for yourself. Also try to find a unique twist on it so it’s not the typical “I went through this hard thing and grew from it” Essay. If you choose your words wisely and present it in a unique way, this could be a great essay. Just be careful.

Half my life I am happy, excited and overall passionate and around my period I am hopeless, angry and depressed. To gain control over this I began plotting my life in spreadsheets to examine the relationships between my activities and my mood and become more aware of myself. Biology class made me realize how out of my control this is and how interesting and complex the human body is. I want to know if there is any way to talk about this without sounding self-pitying! I also want to incorporate my love for science (especially physics and biology), but please let me know if I should just scrap the idea entirely.
@kita46145 жыл бұрын
This may or may not be late but, if you focus less on your disorder and more of how you took the problem at hand and turned your crutch into something that's made you more optimistic, critical thinking and organized. For example the center of your essay could be the first time you made a spreadsheet, the beginning talking about your disorder and the end push for how that decisive moment changed your life and NOT the disorder that used to control you, you should be fine

Something for you to remember is that picking religion as the basis of your essay is a little marginalized and in Common App essays it's less palatable to what is mostly written. Not to say that you shouldn't write about religion, but whentalking about religion, it is very easy for you to be biased which could make a reader uncomfortable . But I'll say that if you do want to talk about this historical event and how it related to your religion and how it affected you, then this religious event has to be unique. for example it has to be a part of a religion that no one has heard of, or that is hardly taken into consideration, this will then draw a reader closer to a new world that is unknown, and that will make your essay interesting. Or it could be in an academic perspective. But definitely do not forget to make the essay about you. Readers want to know why you would want to put yourself in that time period, in that historic perspective. Therefore try not to make the whole entire essay about this event in the past. . If you really want to write about religion, try to put your self in the shoes of the reader, and ask, is my writing going to make them feel uncomfortable. In all, just write it in different perspectives. Dont be too biased. Dont try to impose your religion or make is it the most superior thing in the world even though you may believe it is.. just write in a way that people who are not of your religion will able to freely read your essay and understand who you are through it.

That's a great topic to write about! A peer I knew wrote about living in poverty and being homeless; she was admitted to Johns Hopkins. However, you need to make sure you begin the essay with how it affected you. Make sure you talk about how you grew and adapted despite your circumstances. Such an essay will show the adversity you needed to overcome, but most importantly that you did not let your circumstances dictate your ability to succeed. If written well, the biggest theme will be your resilience.

Do you think i could talk about how in elementary school i saw my sister as the quintessential bad girl and decided to be like her, and then i realized that it wasnt worth it because i hated how people saw me and how i treated people and i wanted to be more like myself. And now i realize we cant just seek to emulste someone and have it work because what we see on the outside is only a sliver of who they really are?

Maybe avoid the “don’t judge a book by its cover” cliche then it seems good otherwise.

I’d say to make sure to focus on yourself in high school/more recent self. Colleges don’t really like to hear abt struggles u had in 2nd grade if they didn’t affect the rest of your life. Just make sure it affects yourself and life in your HS academic career even though the problem started when u were in elementary. I hope this helps!

So I just moved to the United States from Africa and how hard it was, I am a bit antisocial and my essay is about me adjusting to the school pattern getting involved in school extracurricular activities is that a good start?
@WriteYourAcceptance5 жыл бұрын
That's definitely a good start! Think about how you will show the difficulty of acclimating to your new environment, bring in rituals that feel really "American" in a high school, maybe bring a quick flashback to how different that exchange would have been back home...if you do this in the beginning consider then doing something similar in the end but an example that would feel pretty similar (universal) in experience whether in Africa or the US then consider reflecting on a lesson about how diversity is enriching our experiences but ultimately teaching us that we are always more similar than different. Good luck!

Ok. This has nothing to do with this but why did you say 'Africa' . Its a huge continent and Im from Kenya so its pretty annoying when people say Africa. But that's ausome. Your idea is great😊
@aliciabenshki55865 жыл бұрын
@@ceci9570 I know me too, but in America and other continents, 'Africa' is used(at least by people who dont know that much about Africa) to refer to an African country. Sometimes you get people who ask, which part of africa, and them we answer, like for me it's Ghana. But you are right, we africans have to specific, cuz each african country has its own unique background. Personally, I'm guilty of saying Africa sometimes, to save myself from the five hundred and thirty questions that follow, sometimes I'm happy to answer those curious questions but sometimes I get tired of the same question every single day.

Bruh 1-2 sentences on a serious topic? If you went through something traumatic and it affects your life, it's going to be more than 1-2 sentences.

So would I have to say "this makes me a good fit for this school because" after talking about the growth I went through?
@anamckiernan98384 жыл бұрын
No, that's not necessary because the fact that you're trying to persuade the reader that the school should accept you is implied :)

To shortly explain an idea I have for my essay: I want to write about how I overcame welcoming from a pretty broken family with my only biological brother (this is the basic idea but there are other aspects involved)

I've heard that you should avoid writing about service/mission trips. I understand that this is not necessarily unique, but is this rule valid?
