right when it started snowing in my town this legend posts a video

I live in Denmark, but am originally from the UK. My girlfriend and I decided to visit my family for Christmas. We really wanted our dog to come with us, but he’s not allowed on planes. I wasn’t a confident driver, and was terrified by the prospect of driving us all there. But thanks to your videos I’ve just completed a trip of 700 miles each way, plus a ferry ride (Copenhagen > Rotterdam > Hull). Despite torrential rain on the way there and heavy snow on the way back, we made it home safe and sound. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and for helping me to become a better, safer driver.

For clearing snow, the best thing to use is a snow brush specifically designed for cars. Search for "car snow brush". They are common here but may be a bit of a specialty in places that don't get a lot of snow. They should have an ice scraper on the other end as well to clear the windows. We keep one in both cars plus one on the porch. That way we don't need to get our hands wet when leaving home.
@ConquerDriving3 жыл бұрын
That's a good idea, if it snowed often I'd probably get one.

One tip I would add, if you have alloy wheels remove any snow that has piled up inside the wheel. Any snow in the wheels will make them unbalanced and on highway speeds your car would vibrate very intensely (which is annoying and will quicken the wear of your car).

If you drive for a living, I’d definitely consider at least Crosscliamate tyres for winter or for temperatures below 7 degrees. A used set of VW fitment wheels would be very affordable and putting winter boots on those ready for use when required would provide peace of mind when dealing with winter conditions.

Also for ice, AutoGlym (I understand it’s a UK firm, I know Ha Ha Brexit) sells a fantastic De-ICER that’s quite popular where I live (Finland). That stuff goes for like € 5,99 a bottle and easily lasts a winter (or may be even two depending on how much you use it). I just spray it generously on ice, wait for like a minute and use the snow brush or squeegee to get it all off.

I case it's not covered in your follow-up video, please do a video where you describe how to recover from a slide in manual car. One of the scariest things that can happen in winter is when you're driving along, there's snow and ice on the ground, and then your car starts sliding, and you can no longer control it. I recently witnessed an accident where someone tried to slow down for a red light, hit a patch of ice, slid into the intersection, and hit a car. Now, unlike that guy I witnessed, I know how to get back control when an automatic transmission car starts to slide on ice or hard-packed snow. However, I have no clue what to do in a manual car.
@ConquerDriving3 жыл бұрын
It's the same in a manual. My driving in rain video explains understeer and over steer but it's hard (illegal) to demonstrate this on the road.

If the snow is loose and not compacted if you have one use a leaf blower works a treat. For icy windows use either a kettle of tepid not hot water or fill a zip lock bag with warm water and rub the warm bag on the windows to melt the ice.

I’d say that the de-frost knob is there for a reason, clean the roof, enter the car and switch on engine and de-frosting. Also using the “proper” (the bigger one) knob automatically turns on the AC and often also the rear and mirror de-frosting. On manual just air towards windshield, ac on, full blast fan and crank to maximum heat.

My trick is a bottle of room temperature water. De-ices the windows in seconds, just let the car run for a few mins first so it doesn't just re-freeze :D

I would say the point you made at 9:33 isn’t good winter advice but the reverse is. If you back into your spot, you get the advantages of A) having better visibility for when you drive off in snow and B) it’s much easier to jump start your car if you get a flat battery, with you car pointing towards the road, rather than away from it.

Yes, winter tires are expensive. However, not as much as you think because, while you are driving with your winter tires, you are not driving with your summer tires. Therefore, your summer tires will last longer and you will not need to replace them as fast as if you were always driving with them. Just think about it this way, two sets of tires (winter/summer) will last longer than only one set of tires.
@ConquerDriving Жыл бұрын
I would definitely have winter tyres, but I don't have anywhere to put a spare set and my household has 3 cars. That's 12 wheels.

In terms of winter tyres, don't get shitty ones. Nokian (including Nordman), Pirelli, Michelin, BFG, Yokohama, to name a few, are examples of ones that know what they're doing. If you're in western Europe, studs are likely banned, so you want a good unstudded tyre if your vehicle is not awd (studs even things out massively, as does awd). In terms of stopping, shitty winter tyres are mostly ok, but in terms of setting off, especially on an icy incline, they do make a difference. Don't be cheap, or you'll learn the hard way not to have been cheap.

Good tip on warm dressing. I bought a 35 euro suit who will keep me warm in me all winter. Going so far to have water in your car is frankly stupid. You are demanded by law to help people with trouble, if their life is in danger.

One part of preparation I wasn't expecting yesterday morning was a frozen handbrake! The only thing that seemed to work to defrost it was time... Funnily enough, at the end of the day it had refroze.
