Hi so I'm doing my lessons at the moment and the other week I was stuck in traffic because of road works and a car wanted to move over so I flashed the lights to let him in and my instructor said if I did it on my test I would get in trouble but I was just been respectful is it true that I would be in trouble
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 3 жыл бұрын
Flashing your lights can be misleading especially when others are present so it is a risky practise, just leave enough room and dip your head at them. That's usually enough and more directed at the relevant person as you will be looking directly at them.

0:52, Why do you need to turn the engine off before selecting first gear? I always park etc with first gear in, and then just turn the engine off, and then pull handbreak up after. Does it matter?

I've now got into a habit of leaving my car in 1st or reverse whenever I'm parked just on the off-chance the handbrake fails. It's probably only useful on my driveway which has a bit of a downward slope, but it's better to be safe than sorry I guess.

The handbrake always has a chance to loosen and your car just may start rolling downhill so its best to make sure you do all the things you can so you have extra protection at whatever happens
@いちごくん-l6d
@いちごくん-l6d Жыл бұрын
@@PalestineWillBeFreeInshaAllah1there isn’t. It’s basic mechanics/physics. The only way you could cause a damage over time is if you then forgot to release the 1st gear before starting the engine. This will of course cause the car to stall which if done too often is not a good thing. So as long as you go back to Neutral just before starting the engine, there is no damage and it is actually “healthier” for the car than the hand break itself if that makes sense
@davidcleckley

When I had an automatic I never practiced any of this because the magical "P" gear did it all. Then I got a manual car, and recently my parking brake disconnected and the parts are on backorder so I won't be able to get it fixed for a little while. So now every time I park and get out of my car, I remember all this stuff and then I have to get back in the car and turn in back on to point the wheels in the right direction and select the best gear for the hill. It's the small things like this I wish I was more diligent about during my first years of driving. Thank you for covering these tips for everyone.

1:40 when the car was rolling backwards with it in a forward gear and the clutch up that forced the engine to spin in the opposite direction from what it’s supposed to. Could this damage the engine or cause any problems.
@raulerrman.5401
@raulerrman.5401 3 жыл бұрын
Good question, in modern day vehicles engines run forwards, for reverse gears an additional gear is used to turn the shaft backwards. If the engine was turned on it would stall and move backwards. In vintage 0 RPM Lanz bulldozers the engine had to turn backwards for reverse without any damage. Sorry I couldn't answer your question 🙏
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 3 жыл бұрын
It is possible to cause damage when the engine is reverse, I know someone who spun on track, rolled backwards and the cam chain skipped teeth and the valve smashed into the piston so badly that it broke off and got stuck in the piston. Turns out cam chain tensioners don't always work in reverse. But this was at speed, parked on a hill the risk is much lower. I let my engine spin backwards when I was demonstrating that lower gears hold the car better than higher gears and it was fine.

Hey Richard, just some advice from a mechanic. Be careful with those demonstrations of rolling back in gear. When in gear, and rolling back, it cause the engine to turn in the wrong direction, if it turns the wrong way for long enough, it will cause it to jump timing when you start it again. I only know this from my younger years of inexperience, doing a clutch job, turned the engine backwards a bit too much, quickly turned into a timing job too!
@ConquerDriving

Thank you, I understand. I know someone who trashed their engine in their vx220 when they spun on track and lifted the clutch up when going backwards at speed. I have a picture of the valve embedded in the piston. I'm not worried at the speed I was doing it at though. Maybe I was a little worried but I wanted to do the demonstration.

After driving manual cars for 10 years, I finally was able to buy sensible cars/saloons with standard automatic transmission. (first a Mercedes 190E and now the Lexus IS250). Having a park gear is so much better than using the handbrake. I feel a lot safer.

Nothing will hold your car other than park (In typical torque convertor automatic) Automated Manual transnission (usually without Park function is different) and Park is actually mechanical spring loaded lever that stops the whole output shaft of the transmission by lodging itself in a large gear teeths, Thats why your car may not stop the second you shift inti park sometime it rolls slightly as this lever drop into a slot and stays there.

Is it just a myth, then? That when you use the gears (1st or Reverse) to park on a hill and another car hits your car, even so gently, that because the gears were "holding" the car from rolling, that would mean the end of your gearbox?.
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 3 жыл бұрын
I would guess the forces that go through your gearbox from the engine are far more significant unless it's a very big hit in which case the car would likely be written off. The engine will turn if your push the car with it in gear. But I am guessing the forces, I've not measured anything. That would be an experiment.

In Great Britain that much money will likely buy a car that will cost a lot to keep it legally on the road through repairs. It's better to wait until you have a higher budget if you can.

I have 2 questions about leaving the car in gear when parked: 1) why do you need to switch off the engine before putting it in gear, and 2) why do you need to press the clutch to put it in gear? (In the cars I've driven, you can freely switch gears without pressing the cluch if the engine's off.) Can the car still roll backwards/forwards if I don't do either of those things? Do these rules apply to every manual car or only some?
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 2 жыл бұрын
If you put it in gear with the engine on and lift the clutch the car will stall or move. You can move the stick without pressing the clutch when the engine is off but it doesn't always go into gear easily.

Can the car roll down in increments on its own, if parked only in gear, on a moderate slope?
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving Жыл бұрын
Leaving it in gear is not guaranteed to hold the car, if the hill is steep enough it will still roll.

@@ConquerDriving I need to park on my ramp leading to the basement, which is moderately steep. I left it in 1st, and it rolls down a few 3-4cms jerkingly after a interval of 5secs approx. I did not notice this before. I thought it would be impossible for the car to move if parked in gear. I am surprised.
@MailboxReviews
@MailboxReviews 8 ай бұрын
@@debadritorajchakrabarti9778Well, the car would be impossible to move if it was in Park(Automatic transmission) unless the part that responsible for this function fails (Parking Pawl) in Manual the gearbox is directly connected to the engine using the clutch, So if it was in gear there is three parts that helps your car stay still 1 obviously the clutch and it's clamping force this is what connects your gearbox to the engine 2 your engine compression (depends on compression ratio) and how worn out is your engine 3 engine mounts if your engine is low compression or has lost it's conpression due to age and being worn out, then your car will slowly roll, you should leave your car in the gear with the lowest ratio regardless of the direction of the car uphill or downhill by lowest ratio i mean your top speed at that specific gear it should have the lowest top speed say 1st top speed is 50kmh and reversr is 45kmh you should use reverse for example if you got your sparks plugs out your car will free roll regardless of the gear choosen, although slightly slower than neutral since the engine has some friction to overcome I hope that helps,
@MailboxReviews
@MailboxReviews 8 ай бұрын
@@debadritorajchakrabarti9778Your car was rolling but not smoothly due to the four strokes taking place in your engine Intake Compression (obviously no ignition or spark since engine is off) and exhaust the car will move faster during the intake and exhaust phase as the valves are open and air is getting out or in the engine. so it will be a jerky motion and not smooth roll. diesel engines have higher compression ratio. thus more likely to stay put.

As always another quality video. One query though: Whenever I see a turn or speed bump with my car in higher gear (imagine 45kph in 4th gear), I apply brakes to make its speed slower like 10-20 kph according to bend or breaker size, then I put it in 1st or 2nd gear according to car speed to cross that bend or breaker. Today I revisited an older video of yours of rev matching where you are not applying brakes & using only gear and clutch to slow down the car from 4th to 2nd gear. Which is better method to slow down for sudden obstacles or to down a gear in those sceneries. I thought that slowing through gears would put more pressure on transmission. Please make it clear for us.
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 3 жыл бұрын
If you rev match well that will cause the least wear. But it's all very minor differences, doesn't really matter.

Is it true that in automatic transmission car on the heels I must put the handbrake on first, and the pull gear on Parking to has less impact on transmission?
@ConquerDriving

If you put the handbrake on, then come off the foot brake and then put it in Park then there will be no load on the transmission. Although the transmission should be able to take this load no trouble at all.

@edwardtye4119

There shouldn't be, as long as you apply the handbrake before putting it in gear. If the handbrake cable snaps, then the gear will hold it. If you put it in gear then apply the handbrake, then the handbrake is the fail safe and the load is on the gearbox, not the handbrake cable. even if the load is on the transmission, the wear will be negligible.
