On Friday August 11, 2023 I pounded out 48 miles, with over 13,000 feet of elevation gain, on some of the toughest terrain in our region - up and down the San Jacinto Wilderness trails Everything about the experience was like an Ultramarathon race day & I took on the role of both race director and participant. The event has been months in the making, including several scout-out training runs to develop the route & plan the logistics. I had just two aid stations where the ever awesome Mary & BJ displayed their veteran crew skills! Then BJ paced me in the final brutal 14+ miles to the finish!

Route description: Start up Apple Canyon (Spitler Peak Trailhead). Go up the steep Spitler Peak trail to connect northbound with the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). Turn left and summit Tahquitz Peak. Go down the South Ridge Trail, then take the dirt roads to the Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail. Go up the Scenic Trail to the Humber Park trailhead (first aid station at mile 24). Go up Devil's Slide trail, then left at Saddle Junction and continue to climb. Turn left passing through Strawberry Junction, then drop down to the Marion Mountain trailhead (second and final aid station, mile 34). Make the massive 4,800 foot climb from Marion Mountain trailhead to the San Jacinto shoulder (I had enough mileage when I arrived at the shoulder that I didn't need to summit). Head down to Saddle Junction, then down Devils Slide trail to the finish at Humber Park!
I slayed the dragon. This route was a beast filled with a lot of tough climbs and beautiful views. I'm glad I did it and am even more glad I never need to do it again. Additional note: My pre-race measurements indicated I needed to add 1.5 miles somewhere, so I did a 0.75 mile out & back at the start to ensure I would hit 48 total miles. Turns out that because I added extra at the start, I had to cut out the 0.3 mile San Jacinto summit.
See you on the trails.
