As much as I loved this song from the live album back in 1972, I'm thinking it's even more meaningful to me now, more than 50 years later. Great vocals and instrumentation. I would urge anyone to watch this entire episode from London. It was magnificent.

Check out their live version from 2006 in Denmark with the Danish National Orchestra. A brilliant performance. Gary's voice just got better and better with age.

Oh, marvelous!😊 I had this on 45 originally. I played it and the flip side, 'Salty Dog' so much the 45 gave up the ghost so I bought th LP. It's great to hear this again.

I still have my 45 of this song, and I ended up really loving A Salty Dog even more and eventually figured out how to play it on piano when I was about 12 in 1972. Cheers!

I live near the city of Edmonton, Alberta, in Canada. This song used to be played A LOT by the local rock stations. And when I say it was played a lot, I mean I heard it so often I went to Wikipedia to find out what the deal with this song was. That was how I learned this song was recorded with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra! The city I was born in helped make one of Procul Harum's most popular songs, and I didn't even know, it blew my mind. Sadly, this ended either a decade or half a decade ago. Now I NEVER hear Conquistador on the radio, and I assume it's because the radio stations were all bought out and have their playlists dictated by someone from Toronto or NYC. It sucks, please bring this song back to local radio.

It came from an old Tv Show that had great music. I agree with you the director of this performance missed the mark by a thousand miles. When this show first appeared I don't think they had a real budget to work with. Probably only had 2 tv cameras. Very limited. It did get better when Burt Sugarman started producing it a few years latter. At least we did get very good audio for a show the executives thought would be a failure. Started on NBC in the 70' s

Yes the drummer has to die or almost die(BRich-Dominican Republic solo, Bonham, Moon, Peart) to get any notoriety !

I'm suspicious of whether the drums were live or not. In the opening wide shot, you can clearly see that the drummer is not playing what you are hearing. I suspect that the drummer is miming/playing as quietly as possible. We've seen a number of MS performers where some or all of the instruments are playbacks with only lead vocals being live.

It's quite obvious this was performed live and not lip-synced. He repeats one of the verses in place of the usual one. He opens with "Conquistador your stallion stands / In need of company / And like some angel's haloed brow / you reek of purity" then later "Conquistador a vulture sits / upon your silver shield / and in your rusty scabbard now / the sand has taken seed." for the last stanza, he repeats " you reek of purity" Back then, musicians actually played their performances, and occasionally, even a professional can still occasionally get it wrong. Amazing performance in any case.

Yes, we're all aware of that. The Brits often pronounce words incorrectly (most of them say "tay-co" instead of "tah-co"). They do it, we Yanks do it, that's just the way it is.
