Thank you so much for this video! I'm revising for my a-levels and I found the chapter in the textbook far too dense, this is perfectly clear and concise.

That's super Jane, I'm really pleased I could help! You might want to go over Freud vs Aquinas comparison as I did this in person with my class :)

33:57 sounds a lot like Blackburn’s ideas that a weak superego creates criminals, something that comes up in psych a level. Could this be used it an essay even though it’s not on the specification?

Yes Sophie, that shows wider reading so would work really well. Don't forget to evaluate any extra names (why do they have merit?) as part of your line of argument :)

If you were to critically compare Aquinas and Freud's approach to the conscience how would you set this out and what 3 things would you compare? guilt, application and origin of the conscience or what would be better? Thank you so much!
@IThinkThereforeITeach2 жыл бұрын
That approach would work very well! Nice clear themes that would enable good comparisons between the two thinkers:)

Hi miss, in an essay can I disagree with both Freud and Aquinas and then offer an alternative view? For instance Erich Fromm
@IThinkThereforeITeach2 жыл бұрын
Yes that would work well as you are still arguing something and showing clear evaluation if you justify why. Just remember keep everything linked to the question and your line of argument clear throughout :)

how would Aquinas or Freud describe Adam and Eve? x
@IThinkThereforeITeach2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bella, Aquinas would describe Adam and Eve as using vincible ignorance = they should have known better than to break a covenant with God. Freud would link it to the Id and say that their 'want' element took over because of under developed superego/guilt :)

Hello, could you link the idea of the *double effect* to Invincible Ignorance?
@IThinkThereforeITeach10 ай бұрын
This is a very good question and one that got me thinking! Whilst I think on the surface they are very similar, invincible ignorance links to do something wrong but not knowing any better whereas in DoDE the consequences are forseen but unavoided. Both as unavoided so the same in that respect but one involves knowing the consequences the other does not due to a lack of reason. Hope that makes sense :)

Is it both types of ignorance that leads to one pursuing an apparent good? Or is it only vincible or invincible ignorance that means one is not going for a real good? thanks
@IThinkThereforeITeach2 жыл бұрын
Conscience, inline with synderesis and recta ratio, is about a person aiming for a Real good, doing what is right inline with their conscience. However Aquinas recognises that this is not always the case (apparent goods) as we are led astray by sensuality. Vincible and invincible ignorance just explains why we do wrong things and whether we are morally to blame or not. So I think he would link both to apparent goods even though I'm not sure he merged the two arguments as ignorance is about knowing better or innocently mistaken. Hope this makes sense :)

hi is the ego conscious and the superego sub conscious ?
@IThinkThereforeITeach6 ай бұрын
Yes the ego is conscious and the superego is both conscious and unconscious. The id is unconscious :)

The root of the conscience cannot be proven scientifically. The conscience is part of our Original Mind from God. It's purpose is to guide every moment of our lives to become better people, less selfish and to eventually reach perfection, centering on God's heart through moral values. It is our teacher. It knows our thoughts before we even know them. That is why we not only must listen to our conscience, but to learn from it and OBEY it, for it is heavenly law. God's motivation for giving us our conscience is to inherit God's love.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts Ken, this view rings true for a lot of key thinkers such as St. Aquinas and St. Augustine.
