The reason why I'm watching this (as an 11-year-old child) is because 2 minutes ago my younger brother choked, and I panicked and I didn't know what to do. I was in tears because I thought he was going to die. I'm still in shock that my beautiful younger brother almost died. Trust me, you think u really hate your siblings and think they're the worst, but once you come to a near-death experience you realise how much you love and care for them. (my 13-year-old sister was babysitting)

Two days ago I had to perform this on my 4-year old daughter choking on a grape. Feel free to make all kinds of funny comments you want, but afterwards please DO familiarize yourself with this technique. This is one of the simplest yet most worthy things to know as a person.

Perfect! Exactly how I was trained. Obviously, he cant do the actual technique on the kid in the vid, so you have to remember, you have to do this technique with force. You dont just roll your fists over her diaphragm and push in, you are doing it quick, with force, but not enough force to break the kid. Remember what this is trying to do, it is trying to push the obstruction out of the airway by pushing in on the diaphragm, its like you are trying to squeeze a balloon. Above all, dont panic or stop if it isn't working, adjust your fists in you have to and dont be afraid to use force.

I have had to intervene with choking once and it is a scary situation for all involved. I was at a barbecue with some friends and one of them began grabbing at their throat. I asked if they was OK and got no response. Asked if they could cough and they couldn't. Thankfully I only needed a few hard hits between the shoulder blades with the butt of my hand. They began coughing and spat out the beef they were chocking on. It was all because I remembered basic first aid from when I was at school and some local paramedics did a presentation. Every job I have had since I always ask to be put forward for first aid training and keep up to date on new ways to do things. Thankfully since that first incident I have only ever had to help with some minor bleeding and a broken wrist but I always want to be prepared just in case

asking them if theyre choking tells you about the severity of the situation.. mild choking (mild blockage; person can still speak) can be intervened by asking the person to cough the foreign body out.. if it doesnt work, back blows might help.. what this guy is showing is if the person is experiencing severe choking where you have to do the heimlich.. hope that helps and hope you wont have to do it.. Maybe that's why they developed the universal sign for choking! a simple head shake wasn't going to do it. Silence gets you nowhere. and it's funny I actually choked on a grape or several grapes at the exact same age as the girl in the video it looks like anyway and it was horrifying and you do automatically put your hands around your throat it's just natural and there's none of this looking around starting to get panicked stuff the adrenaline and panic hit the roof in 5 seconds and it was just sheer insane panic when I couldn't breathe at all and I flew down a flight of stairs and found a parent the end in record time I can't I don't even know how fast it was just insane and my Dad tried to CPR on the Heimlich on me for a while and that wasn't working but my aunt came out and with one thrust it dislodged. Don't ever put grapes in your mouth. Uh...i meanI mean don't let children put many of them in their mouth

Are they still choking if they are coughing? Yesterday (July 13, 2020) my 3.5 yr old nephew started choking but also coughing. I got really nervous. I told him to spit it out on the plate. Then I told him, "Here drink from your juice". What was surprising was that my mom and her daughter in law (not the kid's mom) just kept going on with their conversation like nothing was happening. Performed that manuver on a child that was chocked, turned him upside head down facing away from me and applied quick pressure about 3-4 times dislodging obstruction (witnessed my dad do this to a younger brother) it worked then, so I did it instinctively

sonerscorner two years old is kind of on the cusp between this method or laying them lengthwise down your leg and giving back blows (the infant method). My daughter is really small for her age and I hadn’t familiarized myself with the methods for older children so I performed the back blow method. She got to the point where she was blue in the face but eventually it dislodged the liquid that was holding her epiglottis down (it was a syrup consistency liquid vitamin). Anyway after that I went and got recertification for pediatric cpr because no matter how many times you watch these videos it’s so hard to recall the information when you’re in the middle of a crisis!
