Greetings from Singapore... Being in a country with universal conscription is a experience unlike any other, in which you can always remember in later stages of your life. We have the same defense practices here as well, so may we always stay safe and independent! Singapore x Finland!

As a professional History teacher in the United Sates and a former member of the United Sates Army, with a Master's in Military, The Finish Armed Forces have always interested me. It can be argued that if you compare regular Finnish Soldiers to almost any other nations Regular Infantry Soldier or grunt, one on one; The Finns have the some of if not thy best soldiers in the World. A mostly conscript Army in 1939 with a core of professional soldiers, the Finns put the Soviets in the ground. In the Continuation War they made the German Wehrmacht, Waffen SS, Hungarian and Romanian troops look foolish. The Finns could, did but hopefully won't have to again turn the Forests of Finland into the grave of the Russians. And on top of all this, the Finns attacked their former allies Germany in the Lapland War. A lot of these successes can and are in history accredited to Mannerheims brilliance for wearing a uniform in war, another for politics and another for creating peace. A lot can be said about Baron Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, for the sake of brevity I will leave it to my belief that he was in the top 5 military commanders of the 20th century. Ironic though, that he was from a noble German House and was trained in the arts of war by the Russian Monarchical Government. As to soldier to soldier they match up or are jut simply better soldiers then most, Simo Hayha 500+ dead Communists. Captain Lauri Allen Torni, he was so skilled in killing Communists that after the three Wars from 39-45, he emigrated to the United States and joined the U.S. Army. who at 38 joined the U.S. Army Special Forces, The Green Berets, specifically (10th) Special Forces group. Torni, who in America is referred to in all Military Documents as Larry Thorne died for his new country in South Vietnam. But not after killing a shitload more communists. Anyway, if an Armies wealth, technology, logistics abilities and weapons were even. I would put everything on the Finnish Army to beat any Army in the field. They create some bad ass dudes.

As a Finnish reserve lieutenant I'd like to propose my own list for the best 5 senior commanders in WW2: Zhukov Konyiev Eisenhower (without ever firing a round in anger in his life) McArthur Air Marshall "Bomber" Harris/ Curtis leMay Because they won. The hard way ( except for Ike, who was already a politician, a bit like General Bet-ray-us.) Because only the winners write history. And we Finns finished in second place... after the Soviet Union on the Eastern front. Was not a gentle place even in 1945 when the shooting had stopped. Thanks for your interest in our story man, it's important lest we ourselves forget. Cheers.

@desert32138 жыл бұрын
You should be happy, Sweden has a stronger army than Finland. It's not conscription and manpower that matters these days, it's the airforce, navy, mechanized infantry and tanks. Sweden does not need an unegual system, where half of the population is forced to be slaves because of their gender.
@desert32138 жыл бұрын
Boston Sweden has 40 000 soldiers, so they can man those planes, boats and tanks. Sweden has more planes, Finland has more tanks. Go to Global Firepower. They show it there that Sweden is better than Finland.
@desert32138 жыл бұрын
Boston Russia can't attack Sweden with 2.5 million soldiers, because they don't share borders with Sweden. They need to make an amphibious invasion first, which is diffucult, because the Swedish navy is a rather strong opponent for the Russian Baltic fleet. Russia can't also use their entire Baltic fleet, because of NATO beeing present in the region. In Finlands case, if Russia attacks with 2.5million troops, what is 230 000 soldiers going to do? But the fact that you even said 2.5million troops showes that you really know nothing about warfare. Russia only has total of 3.3million soldiers, they can't use 2.5million of them to defeat one small country.

I think most of us Finns who served our bit for the common fatherland understand that it was a neccessary sacrifice made for the good of the community. Maybe it is a bit too altruistic for the greedy modern individualist you seem to be. Conscription is a valid option to organize a considerable defence for a low population country with huge landmass - and a superpower neighbor.

It doesn't make it fair, still.
@Vulcaani7 жыл бұрын
What do you mean? It is just a matter of how you organize your society. Some people would say paying taxes to feed the poor and maintain roads etc. is unfair. We settled with conscription that is mandatory for males because it is efficient. I dont think that a system including mandatory female conscription would work because of physical differences between the sexes. It doesnt always need to be fair, men here are willing to take responsibility of the defence of our great nation and sacrifice months and years of our lives for that purpose. I understand that this is not a common thing in western societies anymore.

I was a conscript in Estonia, it was pretty fun. Spent 11 months in "Kuperjanov". In the moment, when you are fully wet by the rain, in the dark forest, without being allowed to use a flashlight, and having a 30kg (~65lb) backpack with you, being yelled at, its.. a bad time then. But looking back at it, it was a really good experience.

@@PAULSGEO Well, this is just your perspective. If you grow up in a country, where your older close relatives have been abducted to Russia, your country has been invaded by Russia and so on, its a pretty honorable thing to serve your time. If you are a healthy individual, you will be fine. It grows a pair of balls on a man and not one person i personally know (and served with) disliked the military. Of course i must say, that i provided a really dark memory from the past (that's now cool to reflect on), but there were so many beautiful times with newly made friends too. Calling the whole military experience torture is a bit much. And this documentary is also 10 years old, nowadays the mil experience is also easier. Estonia and Finland both have conscription services because it is necessary for our freedom. I do get where you are coming from though, but most Estonians see the military conscription as a good thing, my Finnish brothers haven't complained too much either :D

@@Seersant Yeah, they don’t complain, because if they do the society downvotes them to oblivion. The society creates such overwhelming pressure on an individual that it seems like avoiding the service is a crime or smth. I do understand your history and I relate to your experience with Russia, my country was also occupied and economically ruined by the Soviet Union. HOWEVER, there’s no moral justification to just force people into blind patriotic obedience and unquestionable loyalty. It’s absolutely disgusting and dehumanizing bulls**t. I don’t care for what reason your country is doing this, putting people into prison like places without their permission is just utterly disgusting. Ukraine could do with as much help as possible on all aspects of winter warfare. Everybody as a idea but Finland are the experts and knows every little detail, tactics and logistics and to apply these. Thank you.
@kimj25702 жыл бұрын
@Denis Morgan There is as cold in northern/eastern Ukraine than in Finland. Gross failures in winter fighting are more to do with sergeants not enforcing strict foot care dicipline, poor winter clothing, poor lodgings, insufficient diet (you need easily 1000-1500 ADDITIONAL calories), and above all, lack of hot drink/food in combat area (you cant survive on cold rations for long, no matter how big they are). Finns hauled field kitchens to almost front lines, even further than light mortars. Men got hot meals and hot coffee just before combat, and on to slash enemy they went. Complexities of fighting successfully in wintertime, and keeping your men healthy, really seems way, way too much to ask for incompetent russian army. Mistakes get magnified expotentially in subzero combat.
@kimj25702 жыл бұрын
In general success comes with well working logistics, and NCOs enforcing strict dicipline of self monitoring. In many cases, NCO must visually inspect feet of every soldier on his command every day or 2. Soldier might not understand what it means that his sore feet suddenly feels just fine. Can run faster than for weeks. It means your have got your feet frozen...

Aaron Mings Conscription has very little to do with gun ownership here. Civilians are prohibited from owning automatic weapons. There are semi-automatic versions of the same rifle we use in the army for civilian use, but... Well. Gun ownership has been made extremely annoying and difficult in this country after two cases of school shootings. Funny enough with our current gun laws both of those school shooters would have still owned a gun.
@Suojeluninja10 жыл бұрын
Aaron Mings In theory yes but full auto weapons require an hard to get special permit. Also that gun is not anymore in production an costs at least 2000 € in a gunshop. Besides how often does one need rapid fire anyway? I'd rather recommend buying a Maxim MG if you have the permit and the money.
@TheCutWolf8 жыл бұрын
At least I was told that I could buy my service weapon after the service ended. The thing is that the automatic firing mechanism would get disabled at that point by the gunsmith. Civilians are not allowed to own automatic rifles here in Finland. I didn't buy because I had no need for it. And I would have needed to get a permit for it as well.

@CivicGuard7779 жыл бұрын
judiccc Well, Finland and Sweden are getting some closer ties with NATO which is concerning Russia highly. If Russia invaded the Nordic countries they would have two angles of America. A war on two fronts. So everything is not nonsense in this.
@garolstipock9 жыл бұрын
judiccc review not so distant history my friend , Russia invaded Finland in 1939.. a typically brazen act of aggression demanding the concession of land it wanted. No other nation in the history of human civilization has owned a land mass the size of Russia and it brutishly bullies neighbors to give it what it wants or takes it by force. Russia doesn't want allies or equals, its never had that and has never ever functioned internally as such, it's for lack of a clearer term, an autocracy if ever there was one. To ignore the character and history of your bully-boy neighbor would simply be foolish for Finland to do if long-term it wishes to stay Finland or else not a vassal state. A nation of the population size of Finland I'm sure would much rather spend it's resources and hard earned money enjoying the finer things in life and taking their ease, but they know their history, their neighborhood and the enormity of that shared border.. They'd be fools that deserved their fate if they chose to put their heads in the sand.

Olen toiminut vuosia reserviläistoiminnassa. Aina harjoitellaan rakennukseen menoa.
@Digiboxi899 жыл бұрын

If your native language is English, you won't have any problems. Everyone speaks decent English, including the training staff, conscript leaders and your fellow recruits. Nobody will be judged or picked for having a language disadvantage. The units often gather all non-Finnish speakers together in the same sleeping rooms, and they will train as a single group as well. so they only have to explain things in English for one group. You will have an experience you will remember the rest of your life. Of course you and your service mates will sometimes be so tired and pissed off that you will enter a status BEYOND being pissed off, and just laugh.

***** Kyllä tulee. Tuo on hyvin yleinen virheellinen väittämä, jota meidän Puolustusvoimat viljelee julkisesti. Nykysodankäynti ei katso miesmäärää vaan kalustoa. Suomen armeijan kooksi riittää vallan hyvin 100 000 - 140 000 sotilasta. Ainoa realistinen uhkakuva on siis nopeasti loppuunviety hyökkäys, jossa ilmaiskujen avulla lamautetaan maan puolustus, sekä katkaistaan modernin yhteiskunnan selviytymiskeino, eli sähkön jakelu, maavoimien tehdessä nopean salamahyökkäyksen tärkeimpiin kaupunkeihin.
@iLikeDMR8 жыл бұрын
No Balttiassa, Saksassa ja Ruotsissahan jo suunnitellaan asevelvollisuuden palauttamista.

Finland does have a rather good defence force compared to it's size, but it lacks the ability to stop a very fast, modern invasion.
@Domini_k8 жыл бұрын
I know this is a bit off subject but Germany is thinking about bringing back conscription, if that doesn't you something what does ? Finnish army should be better trained and of course prepared for any event. Finland needs to review it's military alliance soon and make the process fast, time can't wasted. Being neutral isn't wise, look at Ukraine.
@desert32138 жыл бұрын
Resident evil Here is the kind of army Finland needs; 100 000-140 000 soldiers, no mandatory service, better airforce, better navy, better ground arsenal, NATO membership. With these things, Finland would be safe. Does Germany have the right system? Do they use profeccional army, or voluntary reservearmy? Finland should use voluntary reservearmy.
@Domini_k8 жыл бұрын
That is quiet a dramatic structural change, I would be look for a much bigger reserve force 300,000, just look at Israel. I agree extra spending in equipment is a must, no question about it. Could Finland and Sweden agree to combined forces, where each army would be in either country, sharing resources plus more spending power, they should be. As far as Germany is concerned, conscripts aren't the complete answer, it needs to bolster it's active army, considering it's size not a home guard? No question about it has the weapons, but doesn't sadly use the power at it resource, needs to training more and be more pro active, bit of a dark horse.
@Domini_k8 жыл бұрын
Woops, a break down on my numbers for Finland, reviewed. I should have looked at stats first. Dose Finland have the budget for over 100,000 active soliders.
