I’ve interacted a little bit with Lol and he is a very nice person. I recommend his autobiography, a great read.

Absolute truth what he's saying about trying to emulate your favorite artist and the accident that comes with the process is your own sound.

Yeah... I guess it was my subconscious... in any way I try to speak, never enough, however much I try to speak about how important this song and many others are to me, it's never enough. My gratitude to Robert Smith, Lol Tolhurst... is endless.

Robert had a shed in his back yard. He was from a big family and they had a big house with a yard. They'd practice things that become songs like Boys Don't Cry. The neighbours put up with it. Robert's older brother had a big record collection and was known locally as "The Professor", because he knew so much about music. Obviously, that impacted Robert, as he could hear all sorts of stuff that his peers didn't always have the chance to hear. Lol was friends with Robert back then. They actually knew each other since they were 5 years old. Lol would go over to Robert's home and that's also where they recorded their earliest stuff.

I liked the movie Sing Street where they were described as "happy-sad". The main character's older brother also had a big record collection that he learned from.

Boys Don't Cry (The album) is truly one of the best Rock albums ever released. Sublime.

Michael Jackson was so goth he had his face altered to look like Andrew Eldritch. I say this with the utmost love and respect for both of them, of course.
@pennierkaide4985Ай бұрын
Idt MJ was trying to look like Andrew Eldrich, but I've seen photos from 89 where they do like very similar. I also don't think MJ was at all goth. Thriller was one time concept album. The rest of his music was pop, r&b, and dance.

@@pennierkaide4985 Right after I wrote that I saw Shonalika's video about whiteness and goth. I felt a bit bad for being flippant tbh. They did not make any claims about MJ but I learned a lot of fascinating stuff, both about goth culture and about non-white goth artists. Recommended! They did not talk about the Sisters a lot but they did mention a gospel influence, showing a clip from This Corrosion. Which reminded me I heard Andrew Eldritch claim that This Corrosion was a parody of Wayne's "bombast," and that he hired Jim Steinman to produce Floodland sort of as a joke. (That's how I remember the interviews - please fill me in with details and corrections!) I'm happy to take his word for it but I don't think that has much to do with the impact of Floodland on those who heard it, myself included. I personally love the maximalist approach!

@@mikeciul8599 I looked up this video and I'm interested to watch. From the title and a comment I read, it seems that if you're not white, you can't be goth. That's just the impression I'm getting from the title but since I haven't watched it in its entirety I could be wrong. I would hope this isn't true. The alternative music and lifestyle scene, shouldn't be closed to anyone. I embraced this way bc I felt understood and excepted.

It means you like and support Goth music. The rest is just stereotypes. It is a music based subculture, like Metalheads or Emo etc.
