Ashley Martin was the First Woman to Score in an NCAA College Football (Division I) Game, way back in 2001. That was 19 Years ago. So the penalty that you're referring to is "roughing the kicker" which can only occur on a field goal attempt or punt, but not a kickoff. It's specifically if you hit the kicker's plant leg (the leg they don't kick with) while their kicking foot is still of the ground because that is an incredibly dangerous and compromising position for somebody to hit you in while all of your weight is on that one leg (you can straight up ruin your leg). I played kicker in high school and the idea, on kickoffs, is that you may have to make a tackle on the kick returner, so you want to run down the field behind your teammates. When you kick off, your teammates are going to get ahead of you because a) they're probably faster than you are and b) it takes a moment to reset your feet after you kick the ball. The reason that this kicker's kickoff looked funny is because she was doing what is called a "squib kick" where you intentionally kick the ball low so that it's more difficult to return.

Kickers usually don’t run down the field on kickoffs. Most times they are the last line on defense when covering kicks. People usually joke about their attempt to tackle.

Kickers do. They are the last line of defense against the return. Each side has 11 Players. That leaves 10 Blockers for the Returner on the Returning Team. If their 10 Blockers block your 10 Non-Kickers... that leaves the Kicker to tackle the Returner. So yeah, part of her job is filling the right lane, tracking the returner, and tackling the returner if needed. There are only penalties for hitting Kickers who are in the act of kicking (or directly after, while 'exposed')... and that rule is not in effect if you touch the Football first... so if you block the kick (hit it with your body, to include outstretched hand) you can blow the kicker up with your momentum and it's completely Legal. You are on a Football Field, there is a high chance you will get hit. Kickers and Punters get hit, and have to go hit others. It's part of the game. So yeah, her job isn't over once she kicks it... it's a live ball and a Play is happening. She's got a role to fill in that Play.

When I was In high school we had one “powder puff” game throughout the whole year with another school. It was so dumb because there was no team, so they just asked anyone who wanted to do it, even random girls who weren’t in any sports at all. It always ended up being made up of girls from the lacrosse and soccer teams anyway but it was just a super patronizing game. Everyone wore pink uniforms, and everyone treated it like a big joke. I don’t know why they don’t just make women’s American football teams and treat it like any other sport.

It's a thing with Kickers/Punters, and Non-Running QBs. That doesn't mean you can't have a Kicker or Punter, or even QB, that is a physical beast. You can. "Athletic" in Football depends on your Position. You have to be Fast, so a really good 40 Time. Or Quick, so a good Shuttle Time. Or explosive, so a good Vertical. Or Strong, so a bunch of Reps. They measure these things. When you look at these things... none of them are really things you need to kick footballs, or even throw them. So yes, ON AVERAGE, your Least Athletic Positions are Punters/Kickers, then QBs. But they make a faulty argument, because Kicker IS A THING. And you don't have to be able to Play Linebacker, to be a Kicker. If they want to critique her play, they can only do it from the Position she actually Plays. I wouldn't say Tom Brady can't play Football... because he isn't big enough to be a Linebacker. That's dumb.

Ugh these guys need to just quit while they aren't too far behind. I was a linebacker on my middle school football team while I still identified as a female and I had to deal with people like them way too often. Every mistake I made on a play (which I can count on one hand and have fingers left over) was scrutinized to no end and every good play I did was shrugged off as a fluke. And when I went off to highschool I was straight up passed over because my coach refused to have a woman on the field. I was passionate about the sport and got told I needed to "look into a more appropriate sport like track and field or soccer". I did and immediately got a traumatic injury that kept me from ever do sports in a official capacity ever again. I to this day and pissed about it.

Man I loved the hodge twins back in the day when they used to just do fitness/comedy. It’s a damn shame what’s become of them :/
