Doesn't matter who is in charge, they all say they will cut spending, but never do. If a politician says they have have cut spending, it is not based on what was spent last year it is based on what they would like to have spent this year. So if last years budget was $100 and the current year spent is $110, the opposition will say spending has increased $10, the government will say they cut spending by $40 (as they wanted to spend $150). Government also will not cut spending to balance the budget, they will reduce the growth of spending and hope that the economic growth is more and therefore the deficit will fall. This is what Justin means when he says budgets will balance themselves. Conservatives also believe this. Government can also balance the budgets with a tax hike. Look at the federal surpluses, they all came after the GST was introduced and Canada started to raise taxes to match our spending. Of course the party that did this responsible act (Mulroney's Progressive Conservatives) got wiped out by Canadians. Punishing political leaders for doing the right thing makes each of us the problem.
