Conserving the Solebay Tapestry | The Art of the Van De Veldes

What does it take to conserve a 300-year-old tapestry? Specialist textile conservator Zenzie Tinker offers a glimpse into this complex process.
Dating from the late 17th century, the Solebay tapestry at Royal Museums Greenwich was originally part of a series of six giant tapestries commissioned by King Charles II to record the Battle of the Solebay, a naval conflict between a Dutch fleet and a combined force of English and French ships.
The tapestry is currently undergoing extensive treatment at a specialist conservation studio in Brighton. From cleaning and lining to sewing and dyeing, textile conservator Zenzie Tinker gives an insight into the work involved in conserving this monumental masterpiece.
