I believe the Genesis version slows down purposely for dramatic effect, similar to how in Street Fighter 2, when you win, it slows down the opponent getting knocked down. It's just not handled as elegantly.

I've been waiting for this since I met you guys at Too Many Games! Loved this video. I know people think the sound is crap, but I've always preferred the Genesis soundtrack way more. It's punchier. It's more industrial-feeling (which goes with the whole mechanics and magic feel of the original game) while the SNES soundtrack is more orchestral, more like, you're playing as a KNIGHT. I did NOT realize just how muffled the SNES one is until now though! And the Genesis game feels way more like a sequel: You have an upgraded rocket. The mech fight with Axle is a dead ringer for the first game's fight. You now have an optional golden upgrade (Sonic 2, anyone?). The SNES game feels like a spinoff/continuation of the first to me. I like them both though. The final SNES level, on the ship? SO cool. And the flight level is still a favorite, I play through the SNES game just to get to that (even though I'm not a fan of that particular mech fight because Axle is a pain if you don't knock his arms off in time). And it is generally prettier to look at. Thanks for making this video! Nice to see Sparkster get some recognition :)

Even though I played both versions as a kid I prefer the Genesis version of Sparkster. But your opinions about the SNES version made me want to go back and play it believe it or not. Although the game still feels incomplete and brutally difficult I can appreciate the work and features that were implemented into the game where it's definitely worth a sit down session with beers or taking turns with friends that are into old school gaming to sort out strategies between levels. I had absolutely no idea about the sword collecting in the Genesis version or the idea that you can unlock a golden Rocket Knight!!?? WTF!!?? Now I gotta replay the Genesis game too to appreciate all of that versions charm. I know the episodes are Genesis VS Super Nintendo but to me all the Rocket Knight games back in the day were leagues above most of the other cutesy animal platformers and I'm sorry but the recent modern day remake was such a let down for me. Fails in comparison to the frantic, strategic, music driven nature of the early games. :)

I actually like it when part of the game is locked away behind difficulty or something else you have to do, in general, I like it when parts of a game, whether it be a whole level or an exclusive boss is locked behind a difficulty. It gives the game replay value, and rewards you for getting better at the game. Think about it, you replay the game on Hard, thinking you know the drill, exprecting to finish after the 8th stage, but are then completely blown away when you enter the 9th stage!!! And you are like "holy cow, there is MORE?!?

Agreed if it's done well and the cut content doesn't make the game end too abruptly and the skill "entry ticket" to unlock the levels is not too disproportional to the crescendo of challenge of the rest of the game. The non-japanese version of Bare Knuckle 3 does it in a abrupt, unsatisfactory and kinda insulting way, imo. But in this case, and like this video pointed out, the Mega Drive version *does* that by only giving you the best ending if you unlock gold sparkster.

Zesanactor Over-5 Such a compelling argument. However you should be swearing at the people in the video because they also said the snes had its usually muffled sound. Clear is not a word you can use for the sound capabilities on the snes. It usually sounds like it the sound has been recorded in a bath with a pillow over the speaker.

Sup, I'm a speedrunner for both of these games (Have held world record in both games simultaneously) and whilst I like the detail this comparison goes into, I do have to question why controls were completely passed over. I was following along until Sparkster Genesis got the Gameplay score at which point I just thought "Wut." for the simple reason that whatever factors Genesis has in its favour, it sadly controls like crap. Precision platforming and reactions are nigh-on impossible in Genesis, whereas the SNES version has some of the best controls I've ever experienced in a 2D platformer. Super responsive, and you constantly feel like you're actually in full control of Sparkster, as opposed to fighting to get him into a tight spot or attack enemies before being hit. As for the presentation I can't help but notice y'all ignored that Genesis has a constant, inescapable solid bar of colour along the top of the screen that you cannot get rid of, which is really aesthetically unappealing. I've put a ton of hours into both games and strongly believe Sparkster SNES is the superior game. I've consistently enjoyed playing it more and felt more rewarded for playing well than in the Genesis counterpart. If anyone wants to hear any extensive details about how specific game elements stack up against each other in PRACTICE, feel free to reply and ask, I've spent a fair bit of time breaking these games down and picking them apart. By that I mean, I managed to make the garbage mech duel in SNES slightly less garbage by looking at the game memory to determine how the fight actually works. There is strategy involved, the game just fails to teach you anything about how the fight functions, which I fully agree is bad game design.

My main complaint for the Genesis sparkster was the autoscrolling levels, they're very slow and boring, that especially would be worse for a speedrun. Many times boosting into a boss to do damage results in the player taking damage too, so the gameplay is a bit broken as well. I really hate that to fully complete the game requires beating the intro cutscene, which once again is slow and boring. I've never actually beaten the space shooter boss though, I've always just given up and used a password to skip it, I could figure it out, but I don't want to spend the time to.

+David Neighbour As I've just said, I love the Console Wars guys and in some cases they are spot on but in some others they screwed up! To me and I think I'm closer to the truth, all the following games are actually better on Genesis: - Ys III - Street Fighter II (without a doubt, SNES gameplay is butchered, it doesn't even have the CPS-1 combos and it also has slowdowns. Also the Genesis has exclusive features) - Animaniacs - Beavis and Butt-Head - Shadowrun - The Lion King - Sunset Riders (one of the most overrated SNES games. Dumbed down gameplay, censored, all the gags removed... lol. The Genesis version might underuse the system with Konami only using a tiny 4 meg cart but is still a better game) So the Genesis should have a noticeable lead from now but eh ^^

Rocket Knight Adventures was one of the best-designed platformers of the 16-bit era. A perfect example that Konami, at their (brief) best, were unrivaled as developers (yes, even by Capcom!)

Fucking hell what!? SEGA won this!? Rocket Knight Adventures was the best game, but the SNES version of Sparkster despite being more like a spin-off it seems more like the true sequel due to its control scheme. The Mega Drive version played completely differently to the original Dockef Knight Adventures, with the jetpack charging automatically and you moving so slowly that you are forced to jet around like a madman forcing you to take unnecessary damage. However, the SNES game controls much like RKA. The jet pack is charged manually, Sparkster is faster, the sword has a laser, and so on. The SNES sprites also look more like RKA, with for example Sparkster himself looking way more like his RKA sprite than his Mega Drive sprite. The strangest thing is that RKA was getting ported to the SNES, and the sequel, Sparkster: Rocket Knight Adventures 2, started development on the SNES. And the Mega Drive sequel was gonna be the spin-off. However, then the SNES port of RKA got scrapped, so they started development of the same sequel on the Mega Drive instead of the spin off. However, the SNES sequel was nearly finished, so they couldn’t scrap it, so instead they made it a spinoff and removed the subtitle. Then the Mega Drive sequel port was built as the sequel, despite originally it was gonna be a spin-off. That’s why the spin-off plays like original, and the sequel plays like a spin-off. I think both games are good, but the SNES version is better. And the soundtrack is incredible either way. The SNES’s beautiful orchestrated soundtrack sounds incredible! However, the Mega Drive’s FM synthesis and slightly more tracks in my opinion fit the game better as the epic music is still there, but the rough Mega Drive audio sounds incredible when coupled with the gameplay.

For presentation I feel like something to point out is that Sega's hud is worse due to the fact that the HUD doesn't blend in with the background and instead has a solid color at the top. The SNES version on the other hand does blend into the background which looks better and adds more of the game image to the screen.

This is possibly one of my favourites episodes so far. And yes, the Genesis version is way better. I followed the hint from the previous episode and decided to play the games to have an opinion myself. At that point I only had played Rocket Knight Adventures. After playing both games I can confirm 100% the Sega version is more fun to play. The Snes have some moments I really didn't like. The ostrich level is a joke, apparently if you don't kill any enemy on screen the same 2 enemies will fly over you for almost the entire level. The musical level is so forgettable and pointless, and the fight with your rival at the end of the level is very underwhelming. The Sega rival fight is hard, it follows by the final boss and feels more accomplished after you beat him. The Snes is so easy it made me laugh from inside. The boss fight of the space level is one of the worst things I have ever done in a 16-bit game. It is so random, rage inducing, it has no strategy at all. The midboss of the "final" level takes like 2 full minutes to beat at least, you just jump and attack, and jump and attack. The fact you fall straight down after using the jetpack has put me in lots of trouble, and the L/R buttons don't help that much. (In fact, Greg should have gone up and straight down at the end of the video lol). Of course the genesis version is not perfect. In normal mode it is still super hard and the levels takes forever, but it is still a solid action game. Anyways, thank you guys for the episode! Edit: Btw, the "fart" segment could feed a chinese kid with the other end from stretching LOL.

I think i would’ve preferred the same kind of sword as the first one in the Sega game, but other than the difficulty, that’s the only thing I wish was different. Gotta disagree on the Sound judgement. The ones used to display "lack of drums" in Nintendo demonstrate a greater intensity instead, which is... kind of the _point_ of the drums? And with the laser sword... no, that theoretical _doesn't_ sound better actually. It drowns out everything else that's going on, a _definite_ drawback I would've said made Genesis better for lacking. Maybe there _should_ have been some sort of sound more that "swish", but far better that than overpowering the music or other sound effects. As for the Password system, the tranquil tone fits better for a small glade with trees and no enemies, goals, or hazards than a more traditional password screen would've had... like Sega's. Best Sound is definitely on Nintendo. As for Gameplay, you say the rocket charges automatically like it's a _good_ thing, but what if I don't _want_ it to activate, or be on full charge? That little "feature" suddenly becomes quite the large detriment, doesn't it?

I was never a SNES or Genesis kid (was into computers by then). But I keep coming back to your vids. Partially because they are interesting for me to see/contrast these games that I'm not familiar with. And partially because they are so silly. Love that ending. ;-)
