De regulation was the biggest reason that the major transportation companies that were teamster driver employers went out of business the de regulation allowed any freight route to be under bid by any start up carrier without any actual need in the marketplace so basically what happened everyone’s freight became somebody else’s backhaul and the rates were a race to the bottom I lived through that area and it was not good there was also some stubbornness on the part of the Teamsters and nobody wanted to give up any of their hard earned benefits including me so I guess there is blame to go around but later on they went to tiered wage systems nonunion partnered companies and drivers working for about half of what the union scale wages were it was a tough time in the trucking industry thank you for your time
