It baffles me how the dark l is not really well covered by the IPA. For what i know, the l in the word "Allah" in standard arabic, despite being written as /l/, sounds pretty different than the l in say, the word "lobo" in portuguese. Well, such is phonology...
@SoundsAmerican Жыл бұрын
We know what you mean! That said, the IPA is just a tool. People use different transcription styles, depending on their goals. Many dictionaries use a basic transcription because that's what most people need. Professional linguists often use more detailed transcription, including IPA extensions, suprasegmentals, and other stuff, because they have to transcribe pronunciation nuances. So, we don't think it's "right or wrong." There's always a trade-off between accuracy and simplicity. www.internationalphoneticalphabet.org/ipa-charts/ipa-symbols-with-unicode-decimal-and-hex-codes/

@SoundsAmerican Жыл бұрын
The /ə/ (schwa) and /ʌ/ sounds are very much alike, it's essentially the same sound. The difference in pronunciation is that your mouth is slightly more open for the /ʌ/ sound. The /ə/ sound is only used in unstressed syllables and /ʌ/ is only used in the stressed ones. Many dictionaries use only the /ə/ symbol for both sounds, but we prefer to differentiate them in our notation.

To pronounce Dark " l " sound it’s recommended not to touch the tip of tongue to alveolar ridge. But I have to keep it little bit touching. Otherwise I can't produce dark " l "sound.
@SoundsAmerican4 жыл бұрын
That requires a lot of practice. Don't worry though if you can't pronounce the dark 'L' correctly, this sound is usually not critical for your accent. The light 'L' works just as well, you'll be understood.

Hey there! I have a bit of confusion if I have to touch the roof of my mouth when making the Dark L sound in the word, “feeling”. Cuz in “feel”, when I’m making that Dark L sound, I don’t touch the roof of my mouth. If “feel” sounds like “fee (yuh)” ~ Dark L Could “Feeling” sound like “Fee (yuh)ing” or I can touch the roof of my mouth as in, “fee (yuh)ling” Hoping for your response. Thank you very much !
@SoundsAmerican4 жыл бұрын
Hello there! Good question and you're lucky, because there's a really simple answer to it: in the word "feeling," the /l/ is at the beginning of a syllable, so it's pronounced as the "regular" /l/ sound: /ˈfi·lɪŋ/. So you should definitely touch your alveolar ridge with the tip of your tongue when you make it. You pronounce the /l/ as the Dark L sound in "feel" as it's at the end of a word, which is also the end of the syllable. Hope it makes sense :).
@caitzs5 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I'm a native American English speaker from the PNW, and the tip of my tongue is ALWAYS up and touching the top of my mouth. However for "dark" L's the back of my tongue is also up. I cannot say "full" without at least tapping the tip of my tongue up. If I keep my tongue tip down, it feels like I'm swallowing it or have a British accent.

“The “L” is made with air passing through the mouth, around the sides of the mouth like a liquid “ ? I think you don’t truly understand how this “L” sound making mechanism works n you just repeat what you have read n repeat all these wordings. You also forget to mention n show that “L” is a voiced consonant which requires the vibration of the vocal chords n the soft palate is raised when making the “L” sound as air ( the air pushing out from voicing a vowel”) . Let me try- touch the gum ridge with the tip of the tongue n keep the tongue flat. Next raise the soft palate while pushing air through the mouth n vibrating the vocal chords at the same time. Since the tip of the tongue is TOUCHING the gum ridge , air can only ESCAPE by the sides of the mouth.( unlike stop-plosives ,for example , air escape through the center of the mouth). This is for “L” when it is in the initial position. When “L” is in the final position, it is a semivowel (semi, not as sonorous as a regular vowel) n it is liquid because this semivowel has a quality of a liquid as air is passing through the sides of the mouth( unlike the hissing sounds of “z”, final position). You sound completely American but you can’t really teach English pronunciation until you have really learned linguistics.
@DebMer3 жыл бұрын
Listen and repeat exercises are really helpful for students. A linguistics approach can be great, but there's room for and benefit to many approaches. I'm really glad to have found this type of video series for my students to practice with at home.
@UpNfamish23 жыл бұрын
@@DebMer practice with this “L”? Pronunciation of English is throughly studied by linguists n audio scientists n fairly understood. This illustrator clearly didn’t understand the mechanism to produce English speech sounds- he just made it up. Following his instructions, students can’t make the correct “L” consonant at the initial position n he didn’t follow his own instructions too n he made the “L” consonant in the way he normally does, as a “native speaker” n expect students to follow. They keep on saying foreign students can’t pronounce the American accent( n they can), but this is not the point. A licensed pilot can’t be a flight instructor until he has completed a flight instructor training n passed the flight instructor test. It works the same for people who want to teach pronunciation of any language.

U told that when p comes at the last of word it is not aspirated but when p comes some where between the word like(apple),why in the apple word there is not aspirated p though the p is not at the start of word,it is.coming before (a) My question is when p,t,k comes some where between the words!is there any rule for that. Kite,in word kite,t is not in the end so why we dont aspirate t.its not in the end,its before(e).
@SoundsAmerican3 жыл бұрын
First of all, you're confusing letters and sounds. In the word "kite," the letter 'T' is not at the end of the word, but the sound /t/ is: /kaɪt/. The final letter 'E' is silent. The aspiration of the stop sounds applies to sounds, not letters. Second, when talking about the Final Stop rule, we also mentioned that the stop sounds are not aspirated when they are at the end of words *and syllables* . Here's a video where we talk about this rule in detail, check it out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3ezk3-Ziqill7M

Same problem I am facing of k sound- basic, break, cake, book, thank, pink in this word s you was aspirated but back, bake, black, etc in this words you didn't aspirated. I don't have problem about p sound. But this both sound made me confused. Please help me in this case 🥲.
