The wellness community has long embraced alternative approaches to health. But when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, the combination of a quest for answers, distrust of mainstream sources, influencers co-opting conspiratorial phrases and hashtags, and social media algorithms built to keep people scrolling created a perfect storm of misinformation. A new CBS Reports documentary, in the Reverb series, explores how for some, the yoga and wellness worlds became a gateway to conspiracy theories.

I had a “spiritual awakening” in 2019. Thought I was a starseed/light worker. My purpose was to heal my childhood trauma so that I could help awaken the world. I believed that Covid was a “plandemic” and that everyone else was blind and couldn’t see the bigger picture. I believed that it was loving of me to resist mask wearing and vaccines. MY STEPDAD DIED OF COVID and I still did not believe it was real 🤦🏻‍♀️ I am ashamed to have participated in society in this way instead of using critical thinking. I deeply regret it. It turns out that I’m autistic! There are many people like me who are just looking for a reason why they have felt so odd and different from their peers, not realizing that there are more reasonable and scientifically backed explanations for their oddness. I feel so relieved now that I’m not on a mission to “awaken” the world though my own “enlightenment” 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’ll have to explain all of this to my daughter some day when she starts asking what I was doing during the pandemic, yikes.. I was part of the delusion and misinformation that spread like wildfire.

I’m a bit late to the party, but welcome to the club. Knowing yourself is incredibly important. And no matter what anyone tells you, pursue the truth with every tool you have. Don’t take in bs information without logical justification. You will see all kinds of affirmations in the new age community that are never challenged just ‘because’. Understand the dynamics of in-groups, the ‘enemy at the gate’ and ‘saviours’.

Give yourself some grace. We're all searching for something. We all want explanations. We all have the capability of being wrong. I think what's important is that you have become so self-aware, held yourself accountable, learned from it. It's all we can ask ourselves or others. I wish I could give you a hug.

A few things I have learned over the years having so many close personal contacts in the New Age community. 1) Everyone is selling something. My New Age acquaintances spend quite a lot of money on courses, seminars, healing and various trinkets, but on the other hand they themselves sell courses, seminars, trinkets etc. It's like a group of friends who get together to play poker once a month. Yes, you'll lose money some nights, but over the course of a year you'll probably break even - the only thing you lose is time. 2) The New Age is like a spiritual supermarket - you can choose to believe whatever you want because there is no fixed doctrine. 3) Another difference between established religion and the New Age is how me-centric New Age beliefs are. The Christians and Muslims I know are often very community-oriented - social engagement is an integral part of their faith and they are great believers in charity, helping others and improving the social climate in which we live. The New Agers are wholly focused on their own personal development. There's a reason why you never hear of a New Age disaster relief fund. 4) Childhood trauma. Talk to New Agers late at night after a few drinks, and all the stories about childhood trauma start to come out - the death of parents, siblings, sexual abuse etc. I've seen some research that backs this up - the idea that a childhood trauma correlates very strongly with a belief in conspiracy theories.

While I do see where you are coming from and I can't agree with you enough about how childhood trauma can increase someone's likeliness to more extreme ideas and versions of religion, the whole me vs. community dichotomy between world religions and new age religions is not that cut and dry as there are plenty of examples of world religions having very self centred views and of course, being 'one with each-other' is a pretty popular phillosophy in new age religions. I feel like with the whole disaster relief fund example there are a myriad of complicated reasons other than community that puts religious institutions in postitions where they can do things like that in the first place.

To the Tulum yoga lady: I visited Tulum 20 years ago and absolutely loved it. Minimal tourists yet. 1. So you moved there to escape where you came from, but brought a lot of your culture etc (the part you were approving of) there with you. Called Californication; I saw that happen in NM and people are complaining about it in other areas too. 2. Gentrification. One culture moving into an area and moving the locals out, becoming overpriced so that they cannot live in their own homeland. You’re so privileged and righteous.

I’m Christian, and a researcher. Science and religion can coexist, as long as they’re not used to prove or disprove the other. I will admit, my opinion is not a popular one inside and outside of church. A lot of my church friends never got the vaccine, but I did with enthusiasm. I wore a mask, and I stayed home. The issue isn’t the beliefs, it’s the people who believe them that cause a lot of trouble. A reminder, nowhere in the Bible does it mention not wearing a mask or not taking a vaccine. If I were going to say which way the Bible points on that subject, it’s probably that wearing a mask and getting vaccinated are good things because you’re serving others. Let’s face it, most people go to church to feel good about themselves. The true Christians go there to come to terms with all the bad things they’ve done and do their best to serve others out of kindness.

Do not compare the two. Ever. Evangelicals practice the indigenous religion of their parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and other ancestors going back a thousand years or more, because they're squarely a product of that cultural milieu and feel obliged to obey its precepts. Many come from poor backgrounds and reject a few (though by no means most) conclusions reached by mainstream science because they cannot bring themselves to betray the source of ultimate authority over their lives. God is as infallible to them as the collective sum of all PhD-holding experts on earth are to you, if not 100x more so. So far as "evidence" goes, you reject the Bible as valid evidence of the Christian God for the exact same reason that Evangelicals reject the aforementioned scientific conclusions; it contradicts what is said by the authority that one trusts the most. One isn't an objectively more or less rational position to hold than the other, unless you define "rational" as responding to the authority that you happen to be most prone to trust, in which case Evangelicals can just as easily redefine the term as responding to God's authority. These semantic games have no constructive purpose. New Agers, in contrast, are mainly rich consoomers seeking to appropriate a foreign culture for entertainment value. I can understand why your average Indian guy prays to Rama or Krishna, or why your average Vietnamese guy is a Buddhist, but it's doubtful whether a 23 year old Dutch lady doing yoga in an incense-filled room wants anything more than a quick emotional high. Their "belief" is motivated solely by convenience and is less than genuine.
@RalphJBater
@RalphJBater 9 ай бұрын
@eugenesteinbeck9469 "God is as infallible to them as the sum of all PHD holding experts on earth are to you"... that is the problem with your argument... you assume that secular people WORSHIP science as a God, when in reality we look at science as a PROCESS to understand the current 'best explanation' for how reality works. We (including the scientists) DO NOT believe that scientific conclusions ARE INFALLIBLE, on the contrary the scientific process is predicated on showing that earlier conclusions ARE WRONG... one can never know for sure if a scientific conclusion is RIGHT, therefore one seeks to show flaws in the current model... a prime example of this is Newtonian physics which was our best understanding at the time... so good in fact that it served as the basis for engineering most of what we see in our everyday lives today and even successfully took us to the moon... but as our knowledge progressed... and we learned more about subatomic motion and interplanetary motion we realized Newtonian physics was flawed in that it failed to explain our observations at these levels... we DID NOT bury our heads in the sand (like a religion) and hold to Newtonian physics as infallible Gospel, we looked for a better explanation... and the Theory of Relativity usurped Newtonian physics... and today Relativity is giving way to new ideas like Quantum Mechanics as our knowledge about the world we inhabit increases. Additionally, scientists are not preachers. One does not 'trust' a scientist... one trusts the actual DATA and EVIDENCE... the scientific process is 'peer reviewed'.. meaning that the conclusions of a particular scientist (even the best in his/her field) are not accepted on FAITH they are challenged and tested by others trying to prove them wrong... this is the farthest thing from how 'EVANGELICALS' operate which is exactly the way the New Age wellness community works... believe it because it makes ME FEEL GOOD..(you admitted as much in your comment by saying how EVANGELICALS dismiss science and are just holding on to hundreds or thousands of years of tradition - whether it is based on FAITH beliefs passed on for hundreds of years (Evangelicals) or FAITH beliefs held for hundreds of days (the wellness community) FAITH is a poor epistemology and primes the believer to adopt ANY CLAIM without REASON!!

So... On one side, you have the people who were raised to trust and believe everything they are being told by the authorities... And on the other side, you have the people whose trust has either been breached in some way or form, or they have a compulsive emotional need to be rebellious, because they believe that they are being actively oppressed... It's a blue pill / red pill dilemma... But both sides are still trapped, and there is truly no escape, unless you are somehow able to get rid of your fear, your insecurity, your sense of oppression, gullibility, scepticism and distrust, in favour of restoring your individual sense of instinct, intuition and inner knowing... And even then, you would likely still be completely lost, because you are still but a human being in this wicked Creation, where oblivion always rules everything... Who can you then trust, if not even yourself? Sometimes, our only resort is a prayer... Who, then, will you pray to? That is up to you to find out... Do you even _know_ the Creator?

I used to date a woman who worked at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology in Barcelona, and recently we were discussing her idea of going to an acupuncturist and how in her opinion it was no contradiction at all that an old uneducated Chinese woman would possess some ancient knowledge that is just outside of the reach of science, tests, empirical evidence, etc. To me, it is amazing how people can turn off their critical thinking sometimes, and I think some people really have a greater predisposition to this than others. I still haven't watched this CBS report and I guess it will delve deeper into certain contemporary, well-known conspiracy theories, but the fact is that people who respond strongly to these buzzwords (wellness, alternative medicine, spirituality, etc) already generally share attitudes such an excessive distrust of authority mixed with a weird gullibility whenever the source of the information sounds at all 'alternative'.

I feel very uneasy about demonizing health and wellness. I see the overall message on how it can be infiltrated by extremists. But to label people in general who are involved in wellness is extremely problematic in so many ways.

@@ediesaffron3593 I agree completely. Mainstream media in general are in kahoots with the pharmaceuticals. That’s why their commercials are non stop! So of course they’ll find any excuse to demonize holistic healing.

Ah.... the woo woo world has always infiltrated yoga and their spirituality contexts. What they don't realize is that they allow evil spirits and other dark traumatic bs into their body in the sake of finding alternatives, answers to what is proven already. They usually have trauma that they have to deal with before even doing all that woo woo stuff. Great job Mr. Yamaguchi on being balanced on your reporting.

Dr. Miletic, my old pain management doctor kept telling me to do yoga and to keep applying the Fentanyl patches he was prescribing. Then we kissed, went out for dinner, and made love. Then he and his dr.goons manufactured evidence to kick me out of his practice. I managed to get off of all my prescription drugs and now alleviate my pain and suffering with medical Marijuana, yoga and stretching. I only make love to myself now because he and his friends have been trying to destroy me ever since.

Right and that does happen but more often than not the 1 person going there own way is a crank and wrong, and if they are proven right, that becomes the new consensus. Regular people ignoring consensus and guessing at what’s true because the consensus might be wrong and makes them feel bad, isn’t a good way to run a society.
