@@nickmarco9259 Yeah if you think about it the Ottoman Empire was basically the East Roman Empire before the Arabic Invasions. They conquered the Balkans, Anatolia, The Levant and Egypt. And the Ottomans started off as a weak emirate in Asia Minor. The ERE was plagued with too many civil wars. Had they been able to create a stable government they would have been here to this day.

I was thinking similar when he decided to turn forward and make a final stand to the death. Imagine his thoughts. This is it. This is Rome. We can think how this goes back to the Trojan war to the founding of the City and then the Republic and first Emperor Augustus to Constantine the Great's founding of Constantinople and finally to Constantine XI's last stand. Wow Viva la vida. The world is not the same, but we are still aware of this history and the reality of today.

As a Serb I have to salute my Greek brothers on this. I look back on history and see despite being victim to violence, theft and trespass from my Slavic Pagan ancestors the Byzantines responded with benevolence and charity as is the Christian way. Like an adult teaching an unruly child they gave us writing (comparing Cyrillic to the Greek alphabet you can see the similarities), they gave us civilized culture, they gave us the Orthodox Christian faith (and by peaceful and voluntary means, nothing like the forced slaughter the Germans and Franks imposed on Eastern European Pagans) and they lifted us to not live like animals but with human decency and respect. We tell ourselves a story from the past that reminds us how the tables have turned in modern times. Frederick Barbarossa in the Third Crusade passed through Serbia on his way to the Holy lands. The Serbs were astonished at how primitive and barbaric these people were. While the Germans ate with their bare hands like savages the Serbs ate with forks and knives. The only reason why the Serbs seemed to have more civility and culture was because the Byzantine Greeks made us so. If the Eastern Roman Empire was to fall, this was the only proper way for it to end. With God's light in it's eyes and His fury in it's voice. The Eastern Roman Empire may be gone but it's descendants still live today. Maybe one day we will bring back another golden age. But only together. :)

I am a Turk, my ancestors Alparslan did not hold grudges when Roman King Romen diyojen was taken prisoner in the Battle of Manzikert. He set her free by giving a gift. During your campaign in Anatolia in 1922, General Trikopisp was defeated by the Turkish army and taken prisoner. Atatürk did not hold grudges, saying, "Don't be sad, general, there are losses in the war. Napoleon lost in time too." By saying this, she did not harm the person she was her enemy, nor did she hold grudges. I have always respected King Constantine because, as befits a king, he fought and died to protect his city. Of course, I'm not saying to admire our leaders, but I wanted to show the subtle but big difference between us with this comment.

Lovely remembrance of how the last Emperor, that could claim to be Roman, decided to make history. The use of the sources in this video is also on the plus side. Constantine's stance was proud and brave, taking into account how desperate the military situation was. His presence during the siege was instrumental in holding the huge Ottoman army against all odds, as long as humanly possible. David Mega Komnenos should have noted Constantine's example, as surrendering to an enemy emperor ( as David did in 1461) back in the day was eventually harsher than standing ones ground to the end. In any case, Constantine's last speech was part of a long tradition that dated back to the early Roman times and served as a beacon of hope for the enslaved Christians in the Eastern part of Europe. Eventually it has become part of the Empire's legend.

Technically, the last Emperor that could claim to be Roman was David Megas Komnenos. He didnt make a last stand like Constantine XI, but he surrendered for the safety of his people and his family (though the latter would be a lie). After imprisonment, he was given the choice between conversion to Islam (along with which, he would have been given a pretty comfy life) or death along with all of his sons and his nephew. He refused to renounce Christ, so he was canonized as a martyr. A Turkish friend of mine who's a convert to Eastern Orthodoxy chose him as his patron saint, and that's where I first learned of him

There's the eastern Orthodox church which was founded in the byzantine empire, there's the Cyrillic alphabet which was created by St. Cyril who lived in the byzantine empire, even many popular Russian names come from Greek names that were common in Byzantium, like Konstantin (Constantine), Vasily (Basil), Dmitri (Demetrios), Leonid (Leonidas), and Alexander.

"To give you the CITY it is not in my power and in no one who lives here. Our common opinion is willingly to die and dont spare our lives...." And then the Barbarians entered Constantinoupoli,. This was a speech given by a godly emperor to soldiers who knew they would all die defending the aincient city of constantinople, find it difficult to believe that the defenders of the city, and even the very few turks who detected to the side of the byzantines, fought violently and ferociously as if they were consumed by intense euphoria. Every soldier who died defending the city has earned their place in Paradise eternity.

Not anymore, the last chance Greece had at reclaiming Anatolia was during the Greek-Turkish War which they lost. The last Greek city in Anatolia, Smyrna, was lost causing the remaining Greeks to flee from Anatolia. After the war, both nations agreed to a population exchange which now makes Anatolia mostly Turkish
@pierresihite8854

@Δημήτρης Ο Δημήτρης yea you are right, with how the race riots went in turkey in its early years there may be more greeks in secret. I still see no real reason at this point though to attempt a conquest of turkey. I do see reason for north epirus and cyprus. Also if you do somehow conquer the agean coast or constantinople any attempt to kick the turks out would be a death sentence for greece. Even if they were historical claims the whole world will respond in force because they'd view it as ethnic cleansing. If only you guys succeeded during the Greco-Turkish War 1919
@pierresihite8854
@pierresihite8854 4 жыл бұрын
@Δημήτρης Ο Δημήτρης that would be very ideal if in a greek victory that happens on say cyprus or possibly idk thrace. But the reason why I think its impossible to do that is because nowadays population exchanges are viewed as well wrong. At the time it was seen necessary as a way to reduce tensions I think. In the years following it didnt really help. If somehow the world doesnt get involved in the war which I doubt. Then I think population exchange could work
@pierresihite8854
@pierresihite8854 4 жыл бұрын
@Δημήτρης Ο Δημήτρης oh yea the refugee thing hows that going btw? Not to sound rude but I doubt Russia would just stand by as well as the EU and US. Think of it, Turkey controls the Bosporus so if Russian goods want to leave the black sea through Sevastapol they'll have to go through them. So if those straits or the Aegean become a combat zone overtime Russias going to want it to stop so it can continue trading The EU and US are both part of Nato, so is Greece and Turkey. They will not tolerate there own members fighting it out so theres bound to be intervention. China would probably enjoy a weakened turkey though Israel would probably stay neutral if Nato gets involved Also if its fine, could you please recommend any greek books to read? Preferably easy ones to understand

The loss of Andalusia was much more “tragic” than this. You just don’t realize it. Also you’ve gotta love that liar we call “Constantine”, describing Mehmet as an oppressor, yet he never tortured or massacred people for their faith. Ever wondered why there are still Christians in Turkey?
@MrAlepedroza
@MrAlepedroza 4 жыл бұрын
@@mr.excellent6510 You're dellusional. How was the loss of Spain more tragic to the arab world than the fall of Constantinople to the Greeks and Europe as a whole? Losing Al Andalus never meant (speaking objectively) much to the arab world other than culture, since geopolitically speaking, most arab and muslim nations would eventually recover and gain a foothold in World Politics (Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, Saudis, Egypt). Islam is alive and well. A much more accurate, muslim equivalent to the fall of Constantinople might be the Fall of Baghdad to the Mongols in 1258, when a lot more people died and invaluable human heritage was destroyed. Islam was never the same after that. On the other hand, losing Anatolia and Constantinople meant Europe would then be vulnerable to Turkish attacks and berber piracy for more than three centuries. With the City in greek hands, the Renaissance may have flourished even more and spread to Russia, which would have eased a lot of the future enmities that would awake between East and West. A surviving byzantine empire may have helped a lot in technological, philosophical and scientific advances...instead of the intellectual flop the Ottomans and later republican turks would be. Without the city, Greece would forever be damned to be a poor and second rate country, never again able to influence world politics while being threatened by a much bigger, muslim neighbour that's in constant violence. Losing the city, which may have been eventually used as a bounce wall to eventually reconquer Anatolia and the Levant, eventually meant Orthodox Christianity would lose a ton of potential influence, being relegated to a cold and disconnected Eastern Europe.
@Xarriable
@Xarriable 2 жыл бұрын
If it wasnt for the Ottomans the “haha sofia” as you say would have actually collapsed centuries ago. Ottoman architects noticed the building needed reinforcements and saved it from potential collapse by restructuring it. This was possible thanks to the Ottoman empires wealth, as Constantinople was a collapsed city state with only 50.000 inhabitants left. Send your tears to me though, I find the concept of someone whining over this very funny and amusing.
@Xarriable
@Xarriable 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrAlepedroza the city was alread barren of influence wealth technology and power. It had a population of 50.000!!!! It was actually a village before its fall! Modern WESTERN european civilization has very little to do with anything roman, its actually largely credited to COLONIALISM, and the wealth it brought. In the Ottoman era Greek speaking christian assimilated Anatolians and Thracians still lived in peace with the muslims, and many were quite wealthy thanks to their work as merchants facilitating Ottoman trade, something byzantine couldnt as it did not rule the eastern Mediterranean anymore.

As a savior of the empire. Sadly we could never see his great talents since he only served at the end of the empire and only 4 years as imperator of Rome. It's so tragic what happened to constatinople burned , ruined , sacked and many books and artifacts that remained after the 4th crusade were destroyed or descrated. Many people credit that the libary of alexanderia was a libary which had alot of knowledge. In my opinion we should've credited the libary of constatinoplis. It is so tragic what a waste of beautiful nation.
