Todays Ford Model A question of the day comes from Johnathan!
He’s constantly adding water and coolant to the radiator, he can’t find a leak anywhere and would like suggestions on what’s causing this leak issue.
‪@ModelA‬ gives a few reasons for what the problem could be, what to check and try!

Great advice! So my son's tractor blew a head gasket in 2020, I think, anyway I noticed it blowing steam out the exhaust, diesel engines don't do that when their hot. So we replaced the head gasket and went on the next year, until the engine started loosing power. That next spring we pulled the head and found out the the head bolts was at least 20 or more pounds low, the torque wrench was under torquing the bolts. Had another blown gasket and a cracked number 4 dry sleeve. Moral of our story, never assume your tools, i.e. torque wrench, is correct, check to be sure. Sorry for the long story, but I thought it was a good point to share. Thanks for the Q&A advice, have a wonderful day!

Modern engines, but some problems may apply to the model A's. Being I had access to a smog emissions tester I would use it to detect HCs (Hydrocarbons) coming from the radiator opening, then I knew that combustion gases were entering the cooling system. I have also seen small cracks in the cylinder head or cylinder walls that only open when hot and reseal when the engine is cool with no water in the oil, but sometimes a very small amount of oil in the coolant, but it's hard to see at the radiator opening until drained into a pan then you see a thin layer of oil floating on top of the coolant. On modern V8 & V6 engines that have intake manifolds with cross-over systems coolant will leak from the cross-over into the intake valve on the head and then burn in the cylinder. On carbureted cars, some used a cooler plate below the carburetor that if the gasket went bad would also leak into the intake manifold. With any leak, if it's really bad you will see white smoke or excessive water coming from the exhaust tailpipe. Have a great day and Happy Valentine's Day, Mike ASE Master.

Fill the radiator up and leave the radiator cap off. With engine running on fast idle, look for bubbles in the filler neck. There should not be any. If there are, stop engine and remove fan belt. Now start engine again and run on fast idle. Look for bubbles. If NO bubbles without fan belt, but bubbles WITH, the problem is the water pump, not the head gasket. Save yourself a lot of work chasing what you think is a bad head gasket when it’s the water pump. This is not theoretical, I have seen it on several engines over the years. Have a Model A Day! Jim

I seem to have a leak also. What? You say I'm getting old?! I resemble that remark! And the best one: Carry a certain vegetable when you go out in the boat. Then you can say, "There's a leek in the boat!" Or, name your boat 'Therapy'. That way when someone calls to bug you, say "I'm in Therapy!

Question: I just purchased my first open car, a 1928 standard phaeton that is bone stock. Planning to install a fuse and master shutoff next. What are your thoughts about turn signals and safety belts. Is it a good idea for safety belts in a open car? Considering roll over. Rods, Jim

If you're in an accident, you're better off staying INSIDE the car. Add seat belts! If you drive your Model A a LOT, installing turn signals is a good idea. If you're a once-or-twice a month driver, use hand signals. People get a kick out of seeing me do that.

I have my roadster, it has seat belts, we like using seat belts, they do help with safety but it also depends on what kind of wreck you get into, if you roll like our friends did, they were lucky that they weren’t wearing seat belts because they were thrown from the vehicle keeping them safe, if they’d stayed strapped in, they’d be dead. We completely believe it’s important to have turn signals and one of those orange caution symbols on the back, we always install LED break lights and head lights for better visibility 💕 With that, you’ll have to choose what you’re comfortable with, you may never be in a wreck in your Model A, who knows…God willing 🙏♥️

Avoided one of the obvious answers (based on lack of information provided to you). He may just be trying to keep his radiator topped off, which results in overflow out the overflow tube until the proper volume is reached. When I was a newbie, happened to me until I was told to maintain the proper level and then all was well.

No. Some have and claim no problem, but that's too much voltage for the light bulb filaments.

Unfortunately if we do, they might try to sue us also, it’s a shame, allegedly we have freedom of speech, but it’s not always true. The only engine person we currently use and can trust to this day is Willie Baechler or Joe at Turlock Machine…so it wasn’t them lol, however there are others that we just have tried.
@ModelA

Like Tina said. Of the few we have tried, Willie and Hoe are our picks. There are LOTS of shops rebuilding Model A engines, and I'm sure they are good, we just have not tried them yet. Only had the bad experience with that one shop, which shall not be named.
